I was home for a few days last week so I thought I'd grab a few pics of my brothers Lada road rally project. They aren't very good, I had to rush because the battery in the camera was dying... I'm a bit vague on technical details because my brother wasn't there so I couldn't ask what was what! The car used to run a 1500 Lada motor mated up to a Ford Type-9 Box, connected to a Ford LSD. The transmission tunnel had to be cut out and a new one welded in. It's painted Porsche Guards Red and runs on Opel Manta alloys, it looks and sounds great! He's had it off the road for a while, so he can make a few modifications/alter a few things. Limited Slip Diff, all painted and ready to go in. I think it's a Ford one. New engine block: I'm pretty sure this is a 1700 Lada Niva block, with lots of skimming and various bits altered to accept bigger pistons and crank etc. Straight cut box: Ford, I assume! And this is the car at the moment: Can't wait to be out and sideways in it again! How it looked just after it first hit the road, last year: The transmission tunnel in progress: And the old engine - custom made inlet manifold, with a Weber off an old Astom Martin! His daily driver is this estate: Given to him free, just needed some work on the brakes to get through the MOT! It's now a LOT lower, and on Manta rims.

Ha, cool Lada . I never thought about a Niva lump transplant! Wonder if anyone has done it before? Very neat fit I would expect!

What about the 4X4 running gear from a Niva, Riva Integrale anyone?

I spent ages trying to convince him to do that! But for road rallying, you can't alter the spec that much away from the original car...
Doesn't stop him from doing it to the Estate though! If I keep pushing, maybe he'll go for it... We saw a gorgeous Legacy 4WD Estate at a rally not too long ago. The early, sharper-edged one, in Subaru dark metallic blue with Impreza gold alloys, full cage etc etc... I'm trying to convince him to do it like that!

8-)Your brother obviously has taste in motors! Another one I'd like to try would be a Mazda twin rotor turbo in an early Zhiguli style shell, as the Lada factory made some rotary cars itself, using a three rotor engine with 210bhp, but it was found to be quite unreliable and not as durable as the Mazda engine.

I bet he knows/has heard of my brother - the UK Lada community is small, especially rally ones... They all seem to know/swap parts with each other! An interesting (?) fact is that the springs and dampers on my brothers car are from Lotus... He e-mailed the Lotus engineering department on the off chance that they might have some suspension bits left over from the famous Top Gear Lotus-Lada... They did so he gave them some cash and a big parcel with 'Lotus' all over it arrived in the post! I keep meaning to get a 'handling by Lotus' sticker made for him, Isuzu Piazza style ;D

Interesting! The hungarian Lada site, www.ladaclub.hu/ has got an article about a prototype 16 valve Lada engine... I can't read Czech though The guy that runs the site is a good friend of my brothers, we went over last summer for two weeks (3000 mile round trip to Budapest in the red Lada) and he went again this summer... They have some really amazing backyard engine builders/engineers out there!

Cool! It just shows that even now when the former USSR is all a group of capitalist democracies, and many people could now have a dull western european hatchback, plenty of people still spend a lot of time and money on the old Soviet cars, so there can't be too much wrong with them can there?!

A Fiat twincam should fit easily enough, how about a turbo 16v from a Lancia?

It would have to work, the Fiat 124 (which the body design of the Lada Zhiguli was derived from) had a model by the name of the "Special T" or similar which had a twin cam engine, and with a bit of tinkereing maybe the whole Intergrale system could be squeezed in the very similar Lada with a bit of tinkering and fabricating.
