I have the oil. I own a Haynes manual. I know the clear plastic bung is for TDC inspection only. I have a spanner set.
But I'm buggered if I can find the filler hole on a 1991 mk2 1.8 driver?
Please can someone literally POINT me in the right direction?
Thanks

I used to always fill mine via a short piece of hose pipe into the speedo drive cable hole in the top instead, much easier

STU, I have heard that too, but I also recall that only being possible on earlier model mk2's.
Still, cheers.

No, it's definitely possible on anything with a rod change 020 'box and cable driven speedo. I've certainly done it on an '89 Mk2 16v, '91 Mk2 16v and also two Mk1's I owned too, far easier and less messy than filling it via the plug in the side. I didn't used to just top it up that way, I did the whole fill up

Sweet! Will give it a go! Sounds easier. Where is this cable hole, easy to find?

Follow the speedo cable, it goes into the top of the box near where the selector rod mechanism is. I think there's a little bolt to undo and carefully pull the cable out, there's a drive cog on the end of it so make sure it doesn't break off as they are only plastic.
Hope that helps. By the way, if you've a notchy or stiff change that you're trying to help with then a weighed shift rod from a Mk3 Golf (or make your own) makes the world of difference. Highly recommended.
Cheers Stu

This is something I'm going to do in the near future on my 8v GTI. I'm assuming mine's the same as this?

Be careful when you remove the speedo drive as the plastic cog doesnt fall off into the box!
