Now i have a garage again, obviously, before it gets filled with junk, i am on the lookout for something to put in it Now, 4 or 5 years ago when i was buying Mini's at around the £500 mark for a semi-decent project, MGBGT's were fetching similar amounts for cars that needed similar work. Fast forward some 5 years and even a completely trash Mini is going for £800 ish, yet the MG's can still be had for around £5-600? Is there any reason for this? Are they terrible? Is it down to the amount that are still knocking about? Is there just no love for the later, rubber bumpered beauties? An MG would tick so many of my boxes right now, but given the price of scrap and the fact that other comparable cars have risen in value, i am a little worried that there is some fundamental reason why the GT's can still be had fairly cheaply? Can anyone throw any light on these cars for me? Am i worrying too much and should just snatch up a bargain while i still can? Your thoughts please Regards JJ

A £500 GT will be a long term project, lots of rust!
I think MGB's (both soft and hard) got talked up in price a few years ago, the bubble bust and now only the really good ones fetch money.
Plus they're not short on the ground!
I've had a few and think their great, tough, simple and cheap to run. The GT is one of the most handsome cars ever made, for the money!

I've had 3 GT's, including a V8, and all were far cheaper than the soft top version by a massive amount. Even selling them was as struggle but to be fair they were all rubber bumper and I suspect chrome bumper would sell a lot easier. Also you will find pre 73/ tax exempt GT's fetch decent money Personally I prefer Spridgets (got a '72 Sprite) and they seem to hold their value far better even in rubber bumper format. Paul H

I tried to sell my solid, tax exempt, chrome bumpered, full MOTd MGB GT a year or so ago. Despite guide books putting prices way up near 4-5k I couldn't get close to 2k for it. In the end I swapped for a kit car and sold that for nearer the 3k, getting the money I felt the original car was worth. I think they're great cars, but people only seem interested in basket cases to fully restore/break or fully restored minters to polish and drive twice a year - anything presentable and working seems to be unwanted. Considering what scrap worthy Mini etc go for, I think MGB are a bargain!

THIS ............ Looks beautiful! Was it in as good condition as it looks from the photo's? Yeah. Not my work though. We were pretty lucky in finding it- hiding in the MG-OC classifieds online. Had undergone a complete resto and then barely used for about 10 years. Paint wasn't great (fair amount of microblistering etc) but structurally and mechanically it was as good as new. We bought it with no MOT but drove it straight from the vendor to a garage where it passed one.
