this may be me just wandering through life and not noticing things, but I have had a revelation!!! I have, in the past, done a fair amount of rattle can respraying, everything from body trim to a full daihatsu fourtrak (wrist cramp like a teenager watching a saturdays video after that one lol) and although I could get a fairly good finish I always ended up with the odd patchy bit, or lines showing through where the coverage isnt even... then I came across there: www.graff-city.com/product_info.php?products_id=633basically these caps (lots of other varieties are available through the posted website, and others I imagine) give a 3 - 4 inch spray when used to replace a standard nozzle. on some cans with different valves you might need one of these adaptors too... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370282704651?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649(some cans have male valves, some female) anyway reason I'm mentioning this isnt cos I'm on comission, although I'm sure it seems that way, its just I never knew any form of alternative cap ever existed, you can go right down to pencil thin lines if you want, and for a pack of ten its under 3 quid!!! the result when I did my bumpers this weekend was amazing, at least 4 times quicker as the coverage is so much larger, no streaks, no runs as you don't need to keep 'joining' lines of paint up and overlapping... I really really really cant recommend them enough they made it better, easier, quicker, just awesome!!! and then to ruin it all, heres a picture of my car...but you get the idea, it may be grey bumper paint, but its not patchwork and streaky

I've painted a Polo with a 'high spec' rattle can supplied by a painter. World of difference to the usual spray cans you get at hardware stores etc. Main difference was the cap. Had a thin, but wide spray pattern (sort of a thin, vertical line, but fairly wide. If that makes sense...). Very nice! Your result is amazing!

Yep, The Rattle Cans I buy from my local supplier have adjustable nozzles. Rattle Cans seem to be frowned upon by a lot of people, don't know why as if it's a decent one with good prep, you can get excellent results.

How much should you pay for/where to get a decent one that could get a good reslut for a car? Assume the Halfords are not decent enough?

I use Montana graf paint but they don't come with the variable caps, you need to buy them at a very reasonable 25p each. A couple of people (on here, I'm sure) recommended graf paint because it's better quality and dries much quicker. It wasn't even that much more expensive. The boy I buy from has loads of pics of work done with paint he supplied, including loads of cars and bikes.

I must say, I'll give those a try. I've recently painted some bits using genuine Land Rover paints and achieved a good finish and prior to this used Halfords (yeah) paint matching and can making facility and was very happy with what they provided and how it went on. Off the shelf paints have usually been a bit hit or miss. On plastics and lenses, I've always used RC car paints (for yellow lenses or custom tints etc).

^ well I never I was actually thinking of this type of design!
guessing it just snaps on to the top and uses the original nozzle to spray still could get some really good finish (for an aerosol!) using this and a better nozzle! *off to order..*

Lacquer can used with these sort of nozzles too. I've used "knacker lacquer" on DIY wheel refurbs and the finishes have always been excellent.

I've had some great results with rattle cans,I've even used them when I had my professional garage to great effect. One good tip is to put the cans in a bowl of boiling/very hot water for a bit as this helps the paint no end. Be aware though if you have even a small compressor or use of one and a cheapy gun it will work out a lot cheaper to buy the paint and sundries if your doing a large area than rattle cans at about £8 each plus laquer the same. I did a trooper arch once in rattle can and it was as good as the properly sprayed result. A good cut and polish afterwards saves most things.

Just primed my bonnet the other with rattle cans, a bit awkward as I am not the tallest guy alive but turned out pretty good for a beginner, plus cost about 1/10 of getting it sprayed professional.

Nowt wrong with Rattle cans, It makes sense to only buy them from a proper paint supplier so that you actually get a good amount of paint in the can and not just propellant. Prep <as with everything> is vital.
Bargain on about 3 coats to get a good coverage and deep shine if using Single coat gloss.
