Does sound like it's shorting somewhere. I fitted a new headunit to my Golf and I had to use new speaker wire for my fronts, no problem really.

Did you use adapter blocks for the wires or did you cut and splice them? Tbh I'd be surprised if here was any shorting, rather just a bad connection somewhere. If you spliced, did you solder the connection?

no splicing seems to be there in the car, its using those adaptor blocks, which connect the speaker to the door wiring if thats what you mean?

they were working ok, I mean when you sometimes used to shut the door or go over a bump they cut out like has done now, it is probably the door wiring which is nearly 20 years old which don't help it, when I re wire the door wiring would I just do away with the adaptor? how do i go about this ?
or am I talking in a complete other language here, really need to get my head around this car stereo stuff

Ok, if it was a bit iffy before it probably is broken now. Have you had the door cards off to look at the connection to the speakers? I'd say it's more likely a bad connection that a bad wire.

Open the door and check that the plastic conduit that carries all the leads from the pillar to the door are not loose, just a simple twist to lock the conduit.
