Genarally I'm happy with the Tourer... Now that I've had it front end aligned and fitted the spigot rings so that it runs in a straight line. Then it goes and lets the side down again. It's started leaking diesel. Most of the time it's not too bad, but the other morning it was a real pig to start and I eventually needed to jump it. Once it got up and running it was leakinbg diesel out like mad. I got to my garage and started to clean up the area where it appeard to be coming from and restarted it, to see if I could find out where the leak originated. I've put a box around where it comes from in this picture, It looks like thers some kind of 'Brass' plug, on mine there is no plug in the hole. At the moment I have a rubber pipe wedged into it, with a bolt in the end. Mu first though was that it was something to do with the Leak Off system but a mate, who runs an independent garage took a look and couldn't figure out what should be in there, so he checked the parts catalogue and spoke to a couple of main dealers and they all say there is not a part # for whatever plugs the hole and they have no idea what it is for. So, here's the questions... 1. Does anyone know what that hole is and what it should be plugged with? 2. If anyone knows the answer to 1. where can I get one? 3. If not could I get away with setting a bolt into chemical metal to block it off? I know 3 is a 'bodge' but if it works and stops the leak.. Attachments:

not a clue mate, but if you're stuck, sign up to the www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/index.php forum and PM a guy called HighCompression. He knows the workings of diesel pumps like the back of his hand, and can rebuild them blindfolded lol Hes owned a few 2.5 BMW dizzlers and had loads of bother with em, so he should know his way around that engine/fuel system very well indeed.

]I'm not sure it's part of the pump... I may be wrong, I usually am, but I thought this was the main pump. Photo pinched from another site

looks like the bit hiding under the manifold there at the back of the picture is the main mechanical pump. the part circled may be a fuel heater, I don't know this engine that well though, a manual would be a good idea

The manuals, for whatever reason, only cover the Petrol engined cars, neither my Bentley (thumping big US thing) or my Haynes have anything to say about the Diesel variants... :-(
But, you may be right, since the feed pipe from what i though was the pump leads into the 'Thing' hiding under the manifold and the leak only happens when the car is running.

The second thing you circled is the filter, there should be a fuel filter hanging off the bottom of it? can you get a better high res photo of exactly where the leak is coming from, and are you sure it's coming from there, leaks can be tricky things to find try putting your finger on surrounding seams to see if it's running down from anywhere?

The first thing you've marked is the front of the injector pump under the manifold. They shouldn't leak there - they also should have oil round the front of them and I'd say check and see where that is coming from too. The second thing marked is the fuel filter as 10mpg says, and the yellow pipe going between the two is the fuel feed pipe. Both it and the fuel filter nozzles are very fragile so don't touch them unless you're feeling spendy. Do you know what type of pump you have? There are a couple of different ones. They're all Bosch but have different part numbers according to the year. Look at the side of if and try to read the number. It will start 0 2** and end 99*. 993/994/995 are the usual ones for an E34. Once I know what type of pump it is, I can compare it and see what that bit is for.

Ok, this is where the leak is coming from. Start the engine and it slowly fills with diesel. In the other picture, stolen from a different BM forum, this hole looks like it's plugged.

I'd agree, might have had a plug in it, if fuel's coming out of it, it's obvoiulsy not right, i was going to say turn up a brass plug, but the above suggestion might be easier, if you don't have facilities...

I'd highly recommend contacting highCompression, as Wez said.
His name is Alastair and he knows these things inside out. He hates them, but he knows them inside out all the same!
I think he had a 325tds that kept leaking fuel.

I have a feeling there should be nothing there, and it is leaking between the main body and the head of the pump. I had similar problem on a VW TDI pump. Hardish to change because of anti tamper proof bolts and setting IQ injection quantity afterwards.
