I have a bit of a dilemma.... my brothers aged, high mileage and scruffy peugeot 405 has started leaving big pools of oil everywhere, and it appears to be the head gasket as it is at the belt end, behind the cover. I can get the gasket at cost, but the bolts are nearly as much! Do you think I could get away with the old? The reality is that it really is not worth the bother, but apart from the massive leak, it has been a great car, has 7 months mot, and I have the time to do it, so whats your view?

I personally wouldn't re-use stretch bolts. They stretch for a reason, and once they're stretched....
Have you shopped around to see if you can find an alternative (cheaper) source fo the bolts and maybe the HG too?

If you re use stretch bolts, there's a good chance they'll fail completely. Big no no tbh.

Ok, point taken!! lol, will shop around and do it, the car is a total heap, but it seems a shame to give up on it, as its not given up on him. I did forget to mention that he has been running 80% veg for the last few months- with no problems, so saved him a lot. will get on the case then!

Oil leaks are not usually head gaskets... more likely crank seals or cam seals.
I'm going to go against what's above... Reusing stratch bolts is OK IF you know they are usable. There are usually max lengths for the bolts. if you line them all up any that have 'gone' will be obvious (Longer than the majority)

I'd have to go on scruff with this one check the cam oil seal as you may have to get a new cam belt if its got contaninated with oil. But if you do have to change the head gasket then l would use new bolts.
