Just got this in (customer has just bought it ) I'm trying to get the head off to deal with valve problems but the damn thing is stuck solid , it has studs rather than head bolts which is half the problem and they forgot to put any places where you can lever it ! Any tips of getting one of these things off? Heres a pic of the crazy starter motor too.

I assuem you've tried turning it over on the starter with plugs still in to see if compression breaks the initial bond ?

Yes we did that Update, we made 2 puller type devices that attach between rocker shaft bolts and head studs and it got it moving. studs had rusted and expanded which is what made it a right curse word to get off but success! Now to investigate why number 3 exhaust valve is kind of,, oval shaped!

Off topic, but the starter on these amused me too when removing the engine from a friends one. Bloody rare though!

You can get some special "rust cutters" for such rusted head studs. Never seen them myself - just read on other forums. Bascially a tube the thickness of a feeler guage with teeth on the bottom that you can work around the stub by hand operation until it bottoms out.

Blimey. Well I popped up to my friendly local triumph specialist shop and bought a gasket set, exhaust valve, engine mounts and rear wheel cylinders.. off the shelf. Should it all back together tomorrow and then its mot time for this beasty which hasn't run for many many years.

Engine wise, there isn't much you can't get for these old Triumphs. The rusted stud phenomenon is quite common. Even more so on the slant engines and V8's. I always plaster mine in copper grease.

I got one of these a few weeks ago, absolutely love the car, and yes, the exposed ring gear at the front is quite a nice quirk to these cars! I'm replacing the starter tomorrow in fact.
