 Really having problems with my Merc. I thought the rough idle was down to plugs/leads/air leak/fuel filter and anything else i tried out. i have since heard a whistling coming from the fuel pump and it cuts out when you are about to pull away. When you do manage to pull away, it feels like there is a problem with the fuel getting into the engine. Anyone think I am right with fuel pump problem, or has anyone got any other ideas? Currently 100 miles away from home with another 400 miles to go until i get home.

One of my previous W123's got a bit of crud in the fuel system that accumulated in the metering head, causing poor running. With the engine running VERY carefully loosen the bleed screw in the middle of the head and you should be able to bleed off grotty fuel and accumulated dirt. The fuel is pressurised and so liable to squirt so be careful! (wear glasses). Otherwise the pump is an obvious candidate especially if noisy. Change the filter and check the condition of the hoses under the back end whilst you're at it.
