Strangely as I own a couple of old motors I don't actually own a grease gun and I don't know anything about them.
How do they work, what grease do you put in them and what types are there? Is it a one size fits all for all nipples*

Buy a really good quality one and it'll be the only one you'll ever need, I've had a couple of really cheap ones and they stop working after a while. Generic LM grease has always worked for me as I get it from work for nowt .

All grease nipples "should" be the same size but as with everything the more expensive ones tend to be better so you never need different ends for your gun although they do need changing once in a while. There are two main types of gun you see: I prefer the second type as you can hold the gun in one had and the end onto the nipple with the other. All grease cartridges are the same size and you can get loads of different types of grease for different applications. In the past i've found some of these guys products really good: www.sfrcorp.com/I'm an Agricultural spanner monkey so i'm using this sort of stuff all the time any more questions ask away mate. Simon

Jon, I use a pistol grip type one that I have to re-fill direct form a tub of grease rather than using cartridges. Its probably a bit more messy but it doesn't need re-charging that often and it aslo takes gear oil which the Herald needs for its trunnions. You do need to make sure all the air is bled out before you start pumping (ooohh... yes, yes! ) or nothing comes out. (Yeeeeessss!....smokes fag...zzzzzzzzz.) Make sure the little ball valve in the nipple isn't corroded shut or you'll have trouble with the grease going everywhere but where it should. All nipples are the same size "ball" but use different threads so if you need to replace any you'll have to work out what you've got.
