I noticed this today after I parked up and nudged the steering wheel by accident and the lock came on. Since then when driving sometimes you can feel the steering lock catch or actually lock on for a moment When stationary as you turn the wheel either way you can feel/hear the lock kind of catching but not actually locking the wheel! WTF is happening and what can I do about it. Last thing I want is my wheel locking as I come out of a corner... Does anyone know how the locking mech actually works and is there any way I can disable it?

No I don't, but I wouldn't drive it again until it's fixed!

Take the steering wheel off, at the base of the wheel there is castle effect rim. There is a small metal lug at the bottom of the steering column which drop down onto the castle effect on the steering wheel to lock it.
I personally would cut the metal lug off or remove it.

Think it's a 22 or 24mm nut that hold the wheel on.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. Won't be driving it until it's fixed but Its my only car ATM so got to fix it tomorrow or else! When I fitted a different steering wheel I recall a gold metal lug at the top of the column but I guess it will be apparent if there's another when I take it off again.

Remember that if the lock does not work at all it is now an MOT failure.

don't panic, only applies to passenger cars 2001 onward. however... if your steering lock engages while the tester is doing the steering checks it will fail and get a "dangerous" warning

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Great, thanks for clearing that up. Had me worried! Definitely wont go for an MOT like this becuase I plan to remove it tomorrow if i can, having it engage whilst driving doesnt bear thinking about!

as said just take it out, on the e30 the pin is on the top of the column and the wheel is a 22mm nut. put the steering lock on to crack the nut off, then take the steering lock off before you pull the wheel off (else it won't come off!) - then should just be able to remove the locking pin.
