Alright folks, was hoping someone can help me..
I recently bought a mk2 driver and have just got it up and running after much tinkering. Everything seems ok except i'm getting about 15-18 MPG!
This is town driving but surely it shouldn't be that thirsty?!
It has a newish Weber carb, jetted correctly and just rebuilt.. Timing is correct. Just done a head rebuild and full service amongst other things, so i can't really think what could be happening..
The only other thing is, i think the bump stops need replacing at the rear as the back end is sagging and clanking over bumps.. Not sure if that would affect MPG though..
Any ideas would be ace, i'm a bit stumped!

Fitment of a new Weber to replace the Piersburg made quite an improvement of economy on my 1.8 auto. One thought is have you tried rocking the carb whilst engine running ? The rubber mount splits so the carb might be adjust to counteract a big air leak. Rocking the carb will alter the tickover if the base is split.

Does it smell of fuel?
With that poor level of fuel consumption I would be hunting down a leak.

Cheers for the replies folks, Should have said, just had new plugs, leads and dizzy cap.. No rotor arm though.
Vacuum advance is ok. Engine seems to be at correct temp. Maybe a hair above halfway usually..
The rubber mount is also new as it was split when i got the car. Fuel economy is still just as bad though.
It's weird because there was a fuel leak causing the carb to flood into the manifold which i sorted. Timing was also significantly out. All these things should have improved matters but they haven't. Maybe a tiny bit.
I was thinking maybe theres a leak as well.. Had a quick look yesterday but couldn't see anything. There is a definite fuel smell around the filler cap when its closed though.. Could that be the problem perhaps?
Thanks for the help

On my Weber I had problems with a jet constantly getting blocked causing poor running. Mine was an auto and such meant it cut out so don't know if it affected economy. Have you fitted a new in line filter just before the carb to ensure that doesen't happen to you ? I've heard on other cars the diaphram in the fuel pump can leak fuel into the block where it then evaporates due to the heat or mixes with oil in sump if cold. Doubt it's that but another aspect to check - the fuel pump. Also there is a pre heater that I call a hedgehog under the carb in the manifold that is electrically heated. My car failed it's MOT on emissions. Turned out the fuse box faulty so no power getting to this "hedgehog". Not your model but this thread shows the sort of thing - www.forum.clubcento.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2049Paul H

That's interesting about the fuel pump.. My pump makes a ticking noise for about 15 mins after a run.. Maybe thats normal but i always thought it was strange. Any idea how to go about checking the pump? I'll test the hedgehog heater too. Don't think the jets are blocked as i just rebuilt the carb.
Thanks.
