Hi Guys I`ve been looking on Demontweeks website and they do a slide on coilover conversion kit, I know you have to remove the spring platforms (from your original struts) to fit the weld on coilover converters, But how do the slide on ones fit? Do they just rest on the original spring platforms? Cheers Adrian

well you can just rest them . but the whole point is to fit them so you can get wider wheels on . i cut mine off and welded the slip on to were the platform was or further down .

If it's like the ones from Rally Design you cut the old spring platform off, grind the strut body smooth and weld the threaded sleeve on the outside of the strut body. Most struts have 50mm or 2" bodies and the sleeves are a snug fit on the outside. That's what I did with my struts anyway and if you're careful you can weld on the sleeve without draining the strut of its oil. Warning, go through and it all comes squirting out the hole you just made

ive got conversions on my struts. after a bit of abuse i try and look after them as much as possible, every time the car gets washed or goes out in the rain i blast them with wd40

Yeah if you don't oil or grease the threads they seize up and become fixed height again. Damnnit.

I'm also interested in these slide on veriety. The weld on type seem more work- the type of work I don't trust myself with!!
I'm assuming they do indeed just sit on the origional spring cup, but if you need more clearance for wider tyres you can always grind off the spring cup where you need to I reckon.
How much do they go for these slide on type?

Hi www.demon-tweeks.co.uk do slide on ones but i thought they would move about under hard cornering, you mention welding on to the struts without stripping them down,does that not damage the oil or the seals on the inside of the shock? Cheers Adrian

You're welding it quite a way from the seal and as long as you do it in short stitches and let it cool down between welds it will be ok. Obviously it's better if you do strip them but you don't have to.

Not sure I'd want to weld sturts full of oil! Sounds like you're asking for an early barbeque to me. Don't be tight, drain 'em and then do it then fit some inserts.
Leda launched a modular suspension system less than a year ago but it was aimed at the Max market. Clever concept, with removable spring cups with a system of spacers you plugged in to lower the car - these are available in 10-mm increments. It means you only have to buy one set of dampers and you can adjust the ride height, you can un-plug the spring cups too and plug in coil-over conversions as part of the same system. We covered it in Fast Ford with a system for the Focus and in Total Vauxhall for the Corsa too. Not sure how far they've got with other kits but it was called Muki Suspension.

my rear ones are slide over type. unless you have very short springs they wont shift about, as they are always under pre tension. the rear end of grp4 mk2 escorts when turreted run this setup.
