Alright gang, i've just been getting another Sierra P100. It goes OK for what it is, but the 1.8TD engines in these P100's are generally a bit poor in this application I reckon, the japanese 1-tonne trucks with 2.5NA or turbo diesel engines seem far better. I am mulling over what engine could be installed in the P100 to give it a bit more oomph. I guess the ideal would be a 2.5VM TDi from a scorpio, I imagine that would pretty much bolt straight in. But what transit engines could be fitted? I presume one of these banana jobs would poke up out of the bonnet, anyone know for sure? What about the 2.5TDi? Anyone seen this conversion done? All advice welcome.
Cheers, XBOL

The later TDCi version of the 1.8td would swap straigh in with just a few wiring changes. It's the same as the old one but common rail so runs more power. Also the 2.4 duratorque may fit as I can't see it being much taller than the 1.8.

Iveco Daily engine, like in Teh KFW Truck? Available in 2.5 and 2.8, both NA and Obrut. They are pretty sizable, but Ben got one into a Volvo 240's engine bay.

I'm kinda hoping to keep it Ford, just thinking that it will be easier for the gearbox etc. I see the older LDV's have a 2.5 TD Peugeot engine (like in a 505 i think) mounted to a ford gearbox, that sounds like a good option.

I might have one of those gearbox's around here somewhere, ford mt75 but with a peugeot bolt pattern.

Iv thought about this a lot. the p100 is a great vehicle but just needs that little bit extra in the engine bay. the transit engine seems to be the obvious but have you thought about a bigger turbo from a differant engine , and maybe an intercooler, some time ago , i spoke to a bloke that rebuilds turbo"s, and he said there was an upgrade that uses a turbo from a landrover, thats as far as it went, i suppose if he had told me how to do it , he would be out of bussiness in no time. maybe one of you lot know what fits and how to do it?.

You could soup up the original engine a bit, I think the easiest option is to fit an intercooled 1.8 TD from a Mk2 Mondeo, thats seemingly a bolt in swap and takes you from 75 to 90bhp or something, a worthwhile improvement for defo. But I reckon a bigger engine is needed to reduce general stress levels on the motor, the 1.8 litres have to work hard to lug a P100 round, specially one with a load of stuff in the back.

Transit gearbox will have the gear stick come out in the wrong place, so any transit only non ford bellhousing pattern engine is going to cause some issues, personally I would stick a twin cam petrol engine in it, an injection one will do almost as many mpg as a diesel driven sensibly and has 125bhp, should also be way cheaper to buy in the first place.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

The 2.3 diesel in the early Sierras was a Peugeot engine. Not a particularly powerful engine with just 66hp but it may mean that there are Type 9 bellhousings in a Peugeot bolt pattern (I am not sure what box was in the earlier Sierra diesels but Type 9 seems likely)

I will get round to finishing it at some point

The 2.3D is the peugeot 504/ 505 lump also fitted in 1.9, 2.1 guise to the Mk2 Granada Diesels, there is a 2.5 TD version of the peugeot about, this may have been whats in the Sherpa's I have had a lot of experiance with the 2.3D and I'de have another one tomorrow if it wasn't for the LEZ, they've torque enough to pull strongly with well over the maximum legal load + trailler and have seen one reach 500,000 miles, while still returning 40+ mpg, they're never going to win the traffic light grand prix though.
Thinking about it if anybody has a diesel 505 estate.......

That orange P100 was on ebay and in the pics it showed the pug engine NOT a transit Di so no idea what was going on there personly rather tha ruin the handling and loose some of the weight carrying capacity i'd upgrade the engine with mondeo parts with a large intercooler in the front (there are loads of FMIC about for sierras) and up the fueling and boost. Remember if you stick a heavyer engine in you automaticly loose power with the extra weight it's all about power to weight so an extra 20 BHP is pointless if you have to use all the extra power to make up for the extra engine weight Also with popup, in fact i have a twink to go in my P100 when i fit the TD in me cortina, hopefully on LPG ?
