Good to see more pictures an hope the shell is ok after blasting. Keep going with it. Will be worth the wait when its done I'm sure. Spent a little time on it today measuring up for the movable frame/dolly it's going to sit on when it's blasted and primed (mainly so I can move it around and in and out of the garage to turn it around to work on it - must stop myself from getting too far ahead ). Anyway I also had a result in another aspect that was likely to give me issues when/if it's finished and I get to register it in the UK - In hindsight I'm not sure I've fully covered it on here before but I know I've touched on it so apologies if I'm repeating info from earlier in the thread. In Ireland it was registered as 99 GZJ from new and it stayed on that reg during the ownership of Frank O'Rourke as well as Austin McHale - when it left Ireland that registration number was frozen (I'll not go into how it ended up wearing a "B" plate in some of the pictures or why but we all know that it would "ring" some bells) Anyway I managed to get a copy of the Irish reg document from the Southern Ireland equivilent of the DVLA confirming it was registered when new in 79. This also gave me the chassis number something that I couldn't find on the car and from there I used some contacts I have to find out the build records from Opel in Germany and the original colour that Roddy thought was silver was actually a light blue and that tied up perfectly with the original build records Colour can be seen under the peeling paint in this shot I'd had some conversations with DVLA as I want to register it on an age related 79 reg and not contine with the slightly iffy ID it appeared to have - I couldn't get a definative answer out of DVLA - some people I spoke to said without a chassis number to definatively ID the car it would be allocated a Q plate and others at DVLA gave me some hope that the documentation I have gathered would be enough to gain the car a suitable age related plate eben though I didn't have a chassis number. Well today I managed to find the chassis number under a lot of rust and peeling paint and although it's now very faint it is readable (just) and the best news was it ties up so I'll cover it for the blasting process somehow to ensure it's not further damaged or lost

Wow, what a fantastic read! I've got a million and one things to do, but this was a fantastic way to spend a fast-skim 30 minutes of it! Bookmarked.

Good to see you getting on with it Ian! I honestly didn't realise it was such a mess. I thought it was very solid, (albeit a bit toasted.) Love the 'liquid' engineering!!

Good to see you getting on with it Ian! Yeah - my intentions were to have gotten on with it a long time ago Life sometimes gets in the way. I honestly didn't realise it was such a mess. I thought it was very solid, (albeit a bit toasted.) I still think it is very solid (pending final verdict after blasting) - the problem area was the front end which as a result of having lost the most paint has suffered more than anywhere else - this really highlighted the fact that parts of the GSE front had been badly attached - I don't think this was work carried out in Ireland and there were a few clues that helped me here - the slam panel had chassis tags and trim codes related to a 85 GSE (without applying for another log book I reckon BXXX WES chassis number and tags were used so that sort of fits in with "work" carried out this side of the irish sea) - it wasn't done well at all, more ARC weld rather than MIG and no where near the std of welding work carried out elsewhere on the car The back end was probably already rotten under the paint due to the amount of foam packed round the tank as well as laying it on a bed of carpet!! Love the 'liquid' engineering!! Made me chuckle too when I realised what it was from. I'd love to leave it like that ;D but to do that I'd have to remove it and I don't think that would work out very well - have to see whats left from the blasting stage as it doesn't need blasting there.

nice to see this car found us irish rally fans always wondered what happened it keep up the good work I'm very glad for the help of a lot of Irish Rally fans provided to me in 2007 and 2008 - it was instrumental in putting the pieces of the jigsaw together when we had no idea where the car orginated from, when I'm in a position to properly move forward (ie the shell looks better no worse) my intention is to go back to the information requested threads I started on some of the Irish rally forums and give a little update.

Good to see progress on this. I didn't realise you got it so long ago. Sterling work so far, a lot of people would have given up on the shell long ago.

Good to see progress on this. I didn't realise you got it so long ago. Sterling work so far, a lot of people would have given up on the shell long ago. I'm hopeful that it moves on to stage 2. I've been mucking about with big opel/vauxhalls for years but I've never done a sympathetic restoration (if I can be allowed to call it that) always modify/improve/repair from something that is mostly a regular used car. With this project I'll be starting with a shell and building up from that, my only concern is I have a limited budget (as we all do) and whilst I don't want to cut corners I might have to be realistic in my expectations for the finished article - we'll see I guess ;D Yeah - my intentions were to have gotten on with it a long time ago Life sometimes gets in the way. I hear ya! I have that T-shirt. I hadn't realised so much time had lapsed though!! And doesn't it fly..... Got the Commodore project and the Lotus to finish in the Q after this one - I'll be doing them both when I'm retired unless I get a move on.

I saw it at the blasters recently and thought I recognised it, looking forward to following this when you get it back. Hopefully not to much longer before it's home and I can start work in a more positive direction - ie building up not stripping down Meantime I'm trying to get the other Monza prepped ready for an "all Opel Track day" in France (February 25th) so that's currently all weld, grind, add less weight and modify/improve the brakes now that I've removed the ABS system in order to save more weight (must update that thread when I get some pictures of things that are finished)
