So, I'm prepping the Midget for the summer. I've decided to put the Ashley hardtop on it but it needs a repaint. It's going to be satin black, (The top not the entire car) and I've got some moon discs going on it, kinda salt flat racerey thing going on. The hardtop roof is getting a chequer design and I've been thinking about continuing that down the back of the roof. I'm not sure whether to do a thick stripe that covers all of the C pillar or a thin one, running down to the book lock. This gives an idea of the choices... The thin one would have much more of a curve in it to follow the line of the rear window than I show in the pic, It's not easy to do it in Paint, So, what does the panel think? Thin or thick?

Personally, neither.
Even with a curve to them, the look of it doesn't remotely flow with the shape of the roof or the pillars. It would be tricky one to get right with just a stripe, but with it being chequered it'll be a right nightmare to get it to look anything but awkward.
Obviously I am happy to be proven wrong, but I really can't see that working. Even the chequered roof part I'm a bit sceptical about. I'd paint it satin black, fit it, slap the moonies on and see how it all looks then before going mad with the chequer. Simple often works best IMHO.

Is this on a rubber bumpered car ? If so why not checker the bumpers as well using tyre sidewall paint.

if u really want chequers then keep them just on the roof, what about ghosting them into the paint so they're not too in your face??
i think itd look pretty cool

I'm with the others on this, I don't think it'll fit the lines well either way.
That said, ghosting could look cool. Or you could do gloss black chequers over the satin black paint.

If it's going salt flats style, then satin black the hardtop and paint a few gloss white (or red - either way, use the other colour to stripe the edges) scallops on it - one on each C pillar and two on the roof. Then some vinyl stickers on the doors with a race and class number.

What about the key words "summer" and "hardtop" which don;t go together in my book. OK I know this part of the world is a bit wet but for me the limited opportunity we do get to drive around in a convertible with the roof down is a major feelgood factor.
Then it is your car so it's up to you....

The hardtop fits on the soft top screen rail mountings and is held on at the back by the boot lock. Ok, fitting it does involve removing the bootlid so there is that to refit should I decide to run it 'Topless' again, but it can all be done in about 30 minutes. :-) So long as I don't go down the path of moulding the whole thing in, I can still get the best of bioh worlds, although it does mean that I'd be driving a 'Roadster' unless I also refitted the soft top as well. The Ashley is primarilly planned for Wheels Day, then after that, we'll see what the summer shapes up to be.
