Hi guys, chugging along and I get a crazy suffocating smell, popped boot and the battery was leaking and had bulged out! I'm assuming regulator has gone on alternator causing overcharge..?
I've heard there's a few Lucas alternators that fit my car, it's a 70's Silver Shadow 2. I'm trying not to fork out top whack for a new Rolls Royce one, anyone know what other models fit? Ta

Do you know what alternator it is? If it's a Lucas one then it shouldn't be difficult to find an alternative

any pics of the alternator? If it's a Lucas one, there's bound to be virtually hundreds of possible donor cars, depending on its shape ;D

That is the cause of the overcharging tbh. Depending on which alternator it is, it could even be a remote 4TR or similar regulator. Pics are needed!

I should know (cos I work on Rolls/Bentleys every day ) but cant quite remember atm. But don't shadow 2s have the alternator regulator in the boot next to the battery? I'm sure i've fitted a durite equivalent/replacement to one before.

If it is an AC5 then originally it would have an external regulator, but they can be converted and fitted with modern inbuilt regs. I think we may have a recon unit on the shelf, so let me know if you want it.

Anyhow, I've now got my old Lucas Exchange Units catalogues in front of me, and guess what? They don't list Rolls-Royce.
But all is not lost, if you can remove the alternator and tell me what the part number is (It should be on the plastic end cover) I can cross reference it and find out what other makes/models it was fitted to. The part number should start with LRA.

Thanks a mill guys your legends, I'll check part number on alternator tomorrow, I've actually managed to source a used one for £75 plus £25 for the regulator, should have asked but I assume as separate prices they are separate units. I'll post up part number tomorrow Porsche

Ive decided to get the regulator changed first, part number of this is: 1697-D222. Going by Rolls Royce SS alternators on eBay, it seems mine is a CAV AC5 12-53 12 Volt alternator. What other models have this?

Still having problems with this. Does anyone know if I can get an alternator with a built in regulator and fit this to the Rolls? Also looking at the pics below, as you can see the regulator shows High, Medium and Low. On mine there are wires on all 3. Seems strange, I have however been driving it around like this fine for a few weeks now until the overcharge problem started. Any auto-electricians out there around Leicester area..
