u can paint anything with it, apart from childrens faces Maybe I should buy the Hammerite primer first?? maybe then... See I was thinking Hammerite aswell and I know you cant see the underside of most cars bt I just don't like the brushed on look that hammerite gives. I want a very smooth finish and I don't want it too glossy. I'm I being picky?? I was going to use the enammel stuff that Halfords sells and use that 0 satin black - or will this just flake off??

brushed on POR15 would be smooth if done right. check frosts website, or the por15 website its better than hammerite in my experience

Hammerite will dry smooth, thats why its called hammerite smooth I spray hammerite and tbh it dosent make a huge differance, it just makes it easyer as painting hammerite with a brush is a bit of a chore. I used to have a big tin of 'Chassis Black' which was awsome paint for this kind of work, Brush or spray one coat and it was perfect. Frost do something called chassis black but it dosent look like the same stuff as i used. Hammerite smooth gets my vote

brushed on POR15 would be smooth if done right. check frosts website, or the por15 website its better than hammerite in my experience I agree. If done properly it will leave a finish that is free of brushmarks and will outlast Hammerite by years. On the downside it is quite expensive to begin with. You gets what you pays for though!

POR15 is the ultimate IMO as well, it lasts and lasts and lasts... puts up with so much abuse.
I'll be doing my x-member and diff housing and so forth in it when the time comes.

Hammerite seems to go very dull i found if you paint Hammerite first then paint over it with B&Q or Homebase gloss, but ive seen chassis black used at work and it looks the part.

The hammerite satin black is awesome. Sprayed the crapi bonnet with it and even with curse word prep it withstands a lot of punishment.

I too have found Hammerite prone to chipping on axles etc.

I know a few people who have had problems with Hammerite / Smoothrite (I like to use the old names LOL) with it coming off in use, especially on chassis, suspension areas. It doesn't like flex. I'm not sure if the people who had problems applied it badly.
POR15 is supposed to be good stuff, I have a tin of it here and theres so many warnings on it its unreal! The more warnings the better the product in my book though! Apparently you can have problems if you want to paint over it. They do a special primer you can apply over POR15 but it is of course expensive.

Best stuff I have used is Eastwoods Rust Encapsulator primer and then rattle can over the top in any old black aerosol. The stuff is great. I had some of the stuff they use on the Forth Road Bridge / Oil Rigs... Amazing product but horrid to work with.
