Yeah, I thought it probably wouldn't be the clutch, just thought I'd check! ;D Had a look again today, and checked the steering/sump situation, but its got loads of clearance.Had a look for anything else that could be fouling, but nope, all seems good.So thinking maybe a gearbox fault then.Getting desperate now(Brean party is my deadline!), so just gonna drop the box, and buy another one i think.Hopefully it wont do the same thing!

had a similar thing on a mk4 cortina, years ago, bought it cheap cos the guy was convinced it was going to go bang, it was the center bearing had been tightened up in the wrong postion, so was vibrating against the bodywork, ten mins to loosen it and move it to the correct position, drove lovely after that and sold for 3 times what i paid for it!!

I'm really not convinced it's the gearbox if it happens stationary with the clutch in, when the box isn't actually turning.
Has it still got a belt driven fan on it? How's the clearance to the shroud? Any chunks missing from the blades? What about the alternator bearings? They'd all be a lot cheaper to fix than the box, so might be worth looking at first. Try just slipping the belt off and giving it a quick rev, if the vibrations gone you know it's something the belt drives, if it's not, at least you've ruled them out for free.

The fan on it is a viscous item, so no bother there. It also has no shroud!Blades are all good. I was looking at the altenator earlier, wondering.it is quite noisey, but realy don't think its to blame.might just try taking the bet off just in case.very frustrating!

Hi.You mean the centre bearing on the prop? yup that is what i mean, it vibraterd through the whole car, turned out a new clutch had been fitted hence the centre bearing had been off and refitted in wrong place

Ok, small sort of update, As Robin suggetsted above, I took the altenator/fan belt off to disconnect the altenator, and tried for the vibration. And, it seemed slightly less. Then put it back on again, and definatley was worse. Not by loads, but, noticable. So, me an my friend who was helping me, were thinking maybe bottom end?Would kinda make sense in that when taking some pressure off the bottom pulley by disconnecting the altenator, the vibration etc was less.Put the strain back on, and it was worse. What do you think?Engine runs fine otherwise, nice and quiet, untill about 2500/3000 rpm, and then the symptoms start!Cant really hear it in the engine bay though, just when sat in the car. All mountings and bolts etc seem tight, and clearance on everything, sump/rack etc is good,no chance of hitting there.
