There used to be companies around that would make them for you,it involves grinding a groove into the side wall and colouring it. You should look for " white wall " tires, and you are right not to use those "portawalls" .They Squeek on radial tires and wear the sidewalls down !!!!.The cure was to rub silicone grease on the insides of the portawall to shut them up.lasts about 30 minutes. 'been there ...done that...' PT cruser...

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

i had some atlas white band (not white walls) 'spats' on an old marina... got home to show a mate... "what spats"
they'd fallen off on the way home !
If anyone is doing the tyre grinding thing - i wanna know about it ! i want to red line the pickup tyres...

I found that bands you either got lucky with or didn't. Mine would last for 6 weeks or 6miles. Never used grease cos that just helped em come off faster! Fitted a set to matty sidefats 123 and they're still doing ok... Try north hants tyres for 175/70/14 cooper lifeliners (if you've got 14" wheels!!)

Hmmmm, so it really is a bit of hit and miss when it comes to white bands.
curse word. I don't want white plastic Aerobee's flying off decapitating pedastrians as I trungle along.

There's a good article (part of 'tech week') on the H.A.M.B. about DIY whitewalls.
Some tyres have white bands in the carcass and you need to remove a mm or so of black rubber to expose it.

BF Goodrich white-letters may be able to be ground back to whitewalls. Call your local ghetto tyre place and ask them if they have any old ones you could grab for cheap - worth a try *n

i certainly wouldnt cut into my side walls, i dunno just seems like your asking for a blow out! 'old yeller' always ran white walls, and they where just painted on - certainly the way to go if you want the 1950s american look, and I'm sure you could get some paint that would be flexible enough to stay stuck on, yet glossy and good enough to look sweet - also cost half the amount, hoever watch out for paints that eat into rubbers.

Me + Grinder + Tyres = Burnt rubbery mess plus mangled tyre lol
Paint seems like a budget option.. there is white tyre paint available (or at least there was 6yrs ago when I worked in motor spares retail.
