When I was 18/19 I was paying £400 on a VW Beetle, but that was cheap, and cars were cheaper to insure back then before the crazy prices they are now.
To add a cheaper car to insure into the mix I would consider an Austin 1100 or 1300 as well as the Allegro (the latter was silly cheap for my friends who braved to own them!).

From the prices and the way you've looked at getting your dad to take out the policy, I guess you're a new driver? Me and my girlfriend have a car each. Mine's modified and so I go through the hassle of calling around specialist brokers to get a reasonable price and correct cover for the mods. My girlfriend has a bone stock Mk5 Polo tdi. We used the comparison sites and got a renewal of under £500 (she's 21, 3 years NCB, homeowner, rough end of a 'good' postcode). The comparison sites have their place
