I work in insurance - there is no such thing as "cheap" insurance for a 17 year old.
here are a few of the cheaper ones:-
Nissan K11 Micra 1.0 VW Lupo 1.0 Seat Arosa 1.0

www.carinsurancegroups.co.uk/There you go, you can search to your hearts content seeing which cars are in the lower group. Even works with a lot of Retro cars too. It uses the 'old' group range of 1-20, but it will still be a good guide as to which cars to choose.

Thanks for that link, I'd always wondered what group my car would fall into, group 8 as it turns out.

Polo is a Group 4 (unmodified, for the sake of argument) - £900-1100 Princess is a Group 8 - £600-800
That's for the same policies with the same insurers. Insurance groups mean diddly.

Just tried to check the insurance groups of my two cars. DAF isn't even listed on the manufacturer list!
Triumph 1300 comes up with.
"This vehicle is not assigned an insurance group as it is either too old or too rare"

should I use comparison sites because I just searched for vw lupo and it was £4208 or should I focus on cars where I can get classic car insurance or do you need to be a certain age? Its getting more difficult to get classic insurance for under 25s unfortunatly. As for comparison sights don't bother with them. 9 times out of 10 ive had a better quote going direct. Ive also found you often get a better quote if you talk to someone on the phone rather than getting a quote online. Last thing play the insurance companys off each other. i.e. get a quote from one, ask another to beat it and if they do go back to the first and see if they will reduce there quote to get your custom. You really do need to work hard to get a decent insurance quote when your under 25. By doing the above I got last years renewal quote down from £845 to £618 for a policy with two cars on it and didn't change insurers.

At the moment, for any new policy for a new driver, I'd budget £1000. I know it sounds like a lot, but that seems to be the entry level figure for an unmodified car that's 1600cc or less. I really struggled to insure my Polo partly because it was modified and partly because of my post code (was in Sheffield at the time, much higher risk than where I am now, out in the sticks). Actually that reminds me, this is quite handy for establishing what sort of risk insurers will consider you to be as they take postcode into consideration for working out the likelihood of you claiming against them. www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-ratings.php

Please bear in mind your postcode -if you live in a inner city postcode, insurance is virtually impossible no matter how low the group. 99% of insurers will say - computer says NO WAY .

well I'm 22 and looking at insurance for when I pass my test. on a k11 micra I'm looking at £1700 If I could get it sub £1000 Id be happy so gonna try local brokers when I get a car I want. strange thing is sometimes the bigger cars are just as cheap insurance. used to help by having a car that isnt typical of a boyracer but doesnt seem to matter at the moment. oh and read up on that new EU scheme to make insurance equal between sexes. yep they're just going to put females insurance up (a lot by the sounds of it) instead of reducing males insurance a bit.

When we got our young lad his first car, we had a good old play on the PostOffice website. You can change the details of the car and the policy yourself, and it gives you the various quotes.
It became so random that we were looking for either a '96 Corsa or a '95 Clio. '96 Clio or a '95 Corsa were way more expensive. It makes no sense. But have a play with the website, it costs you nothing. Also we found Fully Comprehensive was cheaper than Third Party, Fire and Theft policies.
We're in Northern Ireland where insurance premiums are crazy for young drivers. I think our lad's first insurance was £2200 on a '96 Corsa, which was the cheapest we could find.
On classic insurance, I suspect you'll have a hard time getting it for a young driver, plus in my experience they've always required you to have another policy for a 'main' car.
