Where have the good old days gone? (even 5 years ago this was easier) When you could waltz into a Scrapyard, Grub about underneath a moss-laden car for old bits and bobs, bicycle frames, Wheel trims, carbs, important bits, weird stuff lol, etc etc.
All my local scrappies would rather you didn't go into the yard any more, for me at least, browsing is great fun, I would often go to scrappies just to browse with nothing in mind, I'm sure some of you have found that this is when the good bits are found lol!
So with My local area void of Friendly Scrapyards, I was wondering if there are any good places in the Cheltenham area? have any of you found any good honest scrapyards that let you browse and poke bout?
Apologies if threads similar to this have already been posted many times. I just get so frustrated when there's so much emphasis on recycling etc, but so many barriers to prohibit it too?

You could try Dursley breakers - they let people wander round (or did last time I was there). Only about 20 miles from Cheltenham.
Protip: wear safety boots and take a hi-viz. Shows that you know what you're doing and are aware of H+S.

Harry Bucklands is the usual for Chelt/Gloucester area. You can wander around but cars aren't piled up - they tend to get through them quite quick but often at the back of the rows and towards the back of the yard there's usually some older stuff that's been launguishing for a while. Prices tend to vary.

Dursley is the only one I know of locally where you can still wander round and grab bits yourself. Assume it's still like that.
I also found it helps turning up in an interesting car... They do ask you what you want and direct you to the right part of the yard, so have something in mind even if you do just want a mooch.

Yeah Dursleys are hit and miss, depends if the owner is there or not. One time I was able to wander in without them paying attention to me much, another time I got told to (in a slightly more polite way... slightly) to p1ss orf. Nice. Like is mentioned above, turn up like you know what you're doing and aren't just going to smash and steal things (helps if you're not young) and you'll be good.

Harry Bucklands always used to let you wonder around, the cars are just parked in rows so no climbing needed.
Always used to have really weird stuff in as well,I remember finding a Borgward Big Six in there in the late 1980s.
If they do ask you what you are looking for, just say a bit of trim for a Mondeo or Golf or any car they are bound to have in the yard.

Thanks for all the replies fellas,.... It seems the days of scrapheap scavenging are dying, un understandably it is in part due to toe-rags, health and safety, but also probably because we are certainly all tightening our belts these days, scrap cars must offer (to some people) a cheap way to keep the banger going a little longer.
Any info on Twigworths scrappy?

twigworths wont let you out back to rummage in the piles of cars, you can go out into the section of doors and stuff that has been racked up outside for so long most of it is rusty curse word anyway tho. failing that they do sometimes have a good selection of cars for sale out front, sometimes being the key word there.
