^ Ha, me dad's had those wheel trims. Can't remember if they were the three- or tw-vent version though. It is bizarre that they had such similar designs running at the same time! I think the poverty-grille option was dropped after the first year wasn't it? Uber-rare!

Well spotted Darren! would never of noticed that!!! no idea! as for the 3 doors, The XR4 must of been first on the drawing pad as its meant to be a snide illusion copy of the Porsche 928 i heard, hence the blacking between front window and quarter light. (that trick seems to be rehashed on these GT's too) guess they wanted to save glass panels and metal on povo models, still doesnt explain why they used povo shel on top of range Cossie (apart from weight) oh i give up!!!! ;D BenzBoy on the rear of the grill its kind of a matt but smooth dark grey the material its made from i guess, just like oldskool black grills, Just need paint stripper that wont melt it to see what happened on the front, certainly looks painted!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I havent seen a base sierra for eons. Makes me realise why people were so against them when they first came out, espesialy with no side mouldings they really do look like jelly moulds.

Right, this is grounded on nothing but my memory, but I think Wikipedia is talking b0llocks. I'm almost sure the 5 door was launched the same time as the 3 door. The 3 door was dropped quite soon IIRC. And wasn't the XR4 launched a few years after '82?

Yeah i think the way its written is a bit wonky! they (5 and povo 3 door) came out at the same time i'm sure, From memory the xr4 was out in 84 or summat but i don't know if they had the XR design locked away and 5 doors were derived from it, or whether the designer, thought right I'll make this jelly mould sporty just like the Porker 928!

Also, I'm pretty sure the designer of the Sierra didn't do the Porsche 928. The Sierra designer's name was something like Uwe Bahnsen (sp?! I have no idea... delving deep into childhood memory here...). Possibly there was a different designer working on the XR4. I tried Googling but I got nothing. I thought the 928 was designed by Giugiaro, but Googling this has turned up nada too, so perhaps I'm wrong. Someone please correct me if I'm talking rubbish

Yeah i think the way its written is a bit wonky! I just re-read it... yep, it's me being thick ;D A Cossie built on the XR4 shell would have been cool! Maybe they chose the standard 3-door shell because of homologation rules or something like that? Or maybe it was a marketing decision aimed at boosting the standard shape's image... who knows what goes on in these corporate boardrooms!? ;D

I'm not sure why the Cosworth used the base model 3dr shell but many say the XR4i shell is more rigid due to the extra pillars so maybe the Cosworth could have looked better and been a little better too.
The Sierra was based on the Probe 3 concept car I think and that was a 5-door.

OK, I just found this site which lists loads of cars and their credited designers... pretty interesting for those into the design side of things. Anyhoo, amazingly years of abuse haven't destroyed the vital braincells, and it was indeed Uwe Bahnsen that designed the Ford Sierra. The Porsche 928 was designed by Wolfgang Mobius. Man, I feel like such a geek.... Clicky!
