I bought the car at the end of last month, it drove with no problems on the test drive. It was sat up for a couple of months prior to me buying it and has been st for the last month.
Anyway I checked all of the fluids today, started it up and let it idle for 20mins. Car idled fine, no overheating, oil pressure good.
So took it for a drive, was fine for 20 mins, then as I pulled up to a junction the car just died. Plenty of fuel in it, again temp was fine and so was oil pressure.
I have tried to re-start the car, it turns over but wont start as if it had run out of fuel. Its pitch black so can't really have a prorper look in the engine bay.
Any body have any ideas?
Thanks

Crank sensor would be my guess, assuming it's got one (more info on engine etc?). Let it cool down and see if it'll start when cold. Could also be a blockage in the fuel, my old Golf Clipper I used to carry a bicycle pump so when it sucked up some gunk, I'd take off the pipe at the filter, couple of pumps (sometimes you'd hear the burp at the other end of the tank - and not too hard, don't want to blow the strainer off) and I'd be off again.
Also this thread probably wants to be in the technical bit.

Fuel pump, or wiring to fuel pump? Sounds like exactly what happened to my Fiesta.

mine used to spit the brass fuel pipe out of the side of the carb, always a little alarming. won't apply to you is yours has FI though

My 924 does this when warm because of an issue with the mixture settings and a sensor. I have to turn it over with my foot on the pedal.

Cheers for the replies.
When it turns over its at normal speed.
I have tried turning it over with foot on pedal and pumping pedal,
Battery in the car is low on charge as has not been run for a while, had to jump it to get it running this afternoon, currently showing 11 volts. Tried jumping it again when the car broke down but no joy.

Based on what the gauge is telling you? because I don't trust fuel gauges on cars that are new to me. Fuel pump relay? (assuming it has one) Does the car have an inerta switch? (cuts the fuel in a crash) Had a Sierra that triggered that when something fell over in the boot

I will get round to finishing it at some point

Put £15 of fuel in it, so its not that, put another £5 in after breaking down just to make sure. Not sure if it has an inerta switch.

start with the basic like telling us what engine is in your r19, what fueling it runs carb or injection!

Is it the 16v Chamade that was for sale on here?

Has it got an ignition relay, and if so, has it jammed? Just a random thing - our Scorpio packed in one day, voltage drop on battery due to dead cells, it caused the ignition relay to jam in an odd way. New relay and off we went. Prior to that the dash did some funky stuff, but it was an early mutiplexed car IIRC.

It has the F7P engine, 1.8 fuel injected. @ Pugman - yes it was the one for sale on here. Not sure if it has an ignition relay, can't do much with it tonight as it's laid up where it died as I don't have breakdown cover. Will get it home in the morning and try and eliminate the possible causes. Pain in the as I was enjoying driving it albeit very briefly.

Bit of a pain with it being a new (to you) car but its likely just another 'owning an old car issue'. From my experience the unknown and fear that its major/difficult to get sorted is greater than the reality. Chill out a bit and listen to the more experienced folk on here and hopefully it will be tracked down to something fairly easily sorted. Old cars do go wrong some times, its frustrating, but don't loose sight of the goal. You WILL enjoy driving it again soon enough so its worth a bit of effort to fix, the rewards will be double.
*working on the assumption that some general motivation might be just as useful as some technical advise.

Cheers Stevek.
I don't think it will be much of an issue getting it sorted once I get to have a look in the daylight. Just a shame that the 2 days of the week I need to drive it are Weds and Thurs, the rest of the week I have all the time in the world to work on it.
Some good suggestions as to possible cause's so far. Thanks to all for these.

if the battery was low is it not possible the alternator has died thus not charging it enough to drive?

If the alternator were the issue, I'd still expect it to start on a booster pack - all other things out of the equation, of course. I used to get about 10-15 miles (less if I needed the wipers) moving my old Visa with a duff alternator and a charged battery. So even on a modern car, I'd expect it to fire from the booster, then maybe die when that was disconnected.

all these replies and no one has mentioned the basics! has it got a spark, and it is getting fuel to the injectors/carb, the first things you should check when a car wont start.

Got it home this morning and checked it over. The fuel pump is not engaging. After a bit of research on the interweb, I found a video on you tube of a guy that had the same problem. He found that the issue was caused by dirty terminals on the fuel pump relay. I will check this tomorrow if it stops raining.
