Engine running on - a problem?speedy88

Hey guys, the 360 has been great so far. But when it shuts off, the revs will die until 0rpm where it will cough and splutter a few more times before fully stopping.
Also scarily, it sounds like it starts to run backwards. I just wondered if any of this is damaging to the engine as I'd be happy to just live with it for now until I get an engine conversion done.
Cheers guys

pre ignition mate , either mix tures too rich or the timing is out , easy fix,.

or the idle speed is too high or the combustion chambers are coked up, they can run backwards and you get a nice puff of half burnt combustion charge out the carb

Idles about 1000/1050 which I think is about right for the engine, perhaps a little high.
Mixture doesn't smell rich so I guess timing. But I don't have to worry about it damaging anything? I didn't think it would but just wanted to be sure.

It's running too hot in the combustion chambers caused by it either running too weak or the timing too advanced. My money would be on the timing

How often is the car used and is it on short journeys? I would be tempted to go with carbon buildup.

I'd say carbon build up aswell, or maybe idle a bit high. Reduce the idle to 850-ish and see if that cures it. I'd be tempted to stick a bit of Redex in the tank and give it an Italian Tune Up aswell!
My Mini does it sometimes, if it's been sat in a lot of traffic before I turn it off and it's running on "normal" fuel - she likes V-Power!
I don't think it will really damage anything short term but it's not the best thing for the engine..
Short term, stick it in gear with the clutch in, and when it drops to 0 rpm just let the clutch up slowly to kill it when it tries to run-on. IF you have a GOOD handbrake!

There's also a foot brake on Volvos ;D *SCNR*
I know nothing about these; but does it have a shut-off valve to surpress runing on? If it does, that might be blocked...
3 things I would do: - check timing & mixture and adjust if neccesary - turn down idle (1000 sounds way too high for any std. engine!) - after that, give it a good blast to burn off carbon build up ;D

Another possibility... my Porsche ran on indefinately as it had a wacky electrical fault and the alternator kept everything alive feeding current back through the alternator bulb, keeping the ignition live 'live' enough to keep everything running!

l'd say carbon build up but if it's not running to rich then maybe not, does it do it only when the engine is hot? if you start it up and kill it after a 30 second or so does it still do it. The idle does seam a bit high so to me petrol is getting through somewhere else, some carbs had diaphrams that split and allowed petrol so travel to places it wasn't meant to. I'd check over the carb, guess it is auto choke is that working ok? check some one hasn't adjusted the choke instead of the idle screw to up the revs?

Had something similar on my Mini when I megajolted it. I wired the Megajolt on a relay (not necessary, but I always over-engineer), and when switching off, the alternator still produced ~2.5V until it stopped spinning completely, which was just enough to keep the relay active. And when I say "just" enough, I mean it - you could literally tap the relay and it would disengage. Almost a special feature... the engine carried on running until you got out, and shut the door a bit hard lol! ;D I put some resisters in series with the relay to drop the voltage as it only needs 6V to be live.

Same as mine - mine was on Megasquirt. The problem was the old relays would open at 7v but new ones open at 3v so the bulb was passing enough current to keep the MS running on it's new relay. Best fix is a diode in the alt lamp wiring.

Dear all - turned out this was the idle speed. Surprising that just 200k would make that much difference! Cheers for the help.

What have you got it down to? I think the one my mate and me have bought for rallying idles at just over 600.

I did it by the book - 900. Yours might've had the B19 which is slightly lower I think.
