If we worry not about which wheels are driven, there is one serious contender for an alternative 2 door saloon. Saab 900 If you're not stuck on the number of doors either, but want to keep it Ford, how about an Orion? I could be very, very wide of the mark with the above, but everything I'd thought to suggest had already been suggested above so I started thinking a little laterally. That lateral thinking also brought me here, though again, it may well not be what you're after. MG Montego. You could get a normal Montego and put something fruity in it and save lots of cash over buying an MG version.

this thread has just turned into post/mention any random. car i would have said an alternative to a mk1 or 2 escort would be something of the same sort of size and style from the same sort of time as the mk1 or 2 escort. cars that would have be the escorts competitors not cortinas capris and montegos ect ect

I wanted a Mk2 Escort 4 door but at the time couldn't afford one, so I bought a Mk5 Cortina. It was a RWD old Ford with T&T and cost less than £500! The more important thing to me was that it was a RWD Ford not that it was very similar to the Escort. Guess it just depends how the OP means "alternative".

Well I have to suggest a DAF coupe. 55 IF you can find one and thats a big IF otherwise go the 66 route and these handle better.

half the cars being mentioned arent even in the same ball park as a escort they won rallies from the seventies through to the early eighties no other manufacturer came close to that the closest you have got to a escort is manta 400 or the chevette hsr

with the 120y they are easy to modify with bolt on bits from the 280ZX, mine even has a shortened Escort axle with a LSD. even though they have a steering box rather than a rack the steering is fine. i gave some Lotus Elises a hard time at a Goodwood trackday (which suprised me probably as much as them) i'd sell it for the right price. it wont be cheap but a lot cheaper than an Escort of similar condition and spec.

I can't believe this thread has got this far without anyone mentioning the corolla ae86! They are more reliable, more modern, easier to modify. I was speaking to a guy that rally prepares mk1/mk2 escorts and he said the ae86 had everything that a mk2 escort should have. I've owned both and believe me the corolla is just as much fun. Hence I mentioned the KE70 Corolla........... Its basicly the same as an AE86 underneath, all the bits fit and its lots cheaper....... for now!! Also the Fiat 131s are fetching good money now for a tidy one...... My friends just bought a 131 Racing 2 door in bright orange and had to go to Switzerland to get it........... drove it all the way back too but it broke down 50 miles from home lol

Escorts are a good laugh, but they're really not ahead of the competition in terms of technology or performance. There's more to a car than it's competitive history. MX-5's have won sod all as far as I'm aware, they're still bloody good cars that drive amazingly.

Escort alternative? How about another saloon from the same era? Same size and similar shape. Better suspension being independent all round. 4 pot versions usually have 5 gears too!

Marina is an interesting idea, how do they handle more power? Mk2 Marina gained sway bars front and rear. Lower two inches and fit 13x7 mags with 205/60 tyres. That gets the front end to behave. Special Tuning did a turret kit and tramp bars. Worked well enough to let the 1300 Marina win it's class on the RAC rally (1972 iirc). Gearbox (same as 1850 Dolomite) won't handle much more than the standard TC power, but there are kits to fit the Type 9. Rover V8s have been fitted, but needs a Dolomite Sprint rear axle (fairly easy swap).
