Living inside the LEZ has means I can no longer run any of my previous DI engined trannys. This makes me sad as real vans should really be of the noisy diesel rarity. What really makes me sad is the rapid pocket emptying ability of our current smiley bus, in reality it's a far better thing to drive all round though costs an arm and a leg compared to the DI's. I've thought about buying a newer van but it has many pitfalls. Mainly I don't want and can't afford a newer van plus I'd foresee a dry bumming on the horizon when the regs get tightened as they surely will do. Any info would be great, I know nothing about LPG and google brings me people who want to sell systems rather than real world advice. ^^^ Did about 340 miles to get there and back which cost me over £100, I'd really like to improve on that ;D

Just don't get tempted to find one (or the equivalent LDV) with a genuine factory fitted LPG conversion to use for yours - they used the pump in tank system, the pump fails and you can't get replacement pumps. About the only bit of that system you can use with a new system is the pipework.

LPG is great stuff, at least in Australia. If it's cheaper than petrol there, I would say go for it.
You do use about 10% more for comparable driving. I have always found that IMPCO systems were very good and user-friendly. I made up my own setup on a Toyota Hi-Ace back in the eighties and I didn't mix the fuels, it was on straight LPG. The downside of this is that you can't afford to run out, you can't just go and buy a tinful and syphon it in, you have to have the vehicle at the bowser. Keep a tow rope handy.
But with a nice big tank and an eye on the trip meter, you get by very well.
If you want to efficiently use dual fuel, you must have a separate setup. Though I guess your Transit has fuel injection? If that's the case, you simply fit the ring-type mixer to the inlet for the injection and switch off the petrol somehow.
Proper systems made to do this include such stupidity as a second computer that controls the gas mixture and spark, but you really don't need this. If you can buy a second hand outfit that's been fitted to a similar size vehicle you will be looking good, but don't worry about computer controls.
As for 'pump in the tank'... I have never yet seen a pump on an LPG system, it always relies on gas pressure to push the fuel through.
Oh, one more thing, the converter has to have hot water running through it. If your lines are long (as I found on the Hi-Ace tapping into the heater lines...) in freezing weather you might not get the engine water hot enough to prevent freezing in the converter and lines. Just something to watch, short lines are the go, probably separate to the heater lines.

go for it fitted kits to several of my vehicles past & present inc the 302 V8 in cortina in my avatar , a gas ring type kit has approx half doz wires to connect shouldn't take more than a day to fit yourself,

theres more to life than mpg & to much power is just enough.

That's to run through a carby?
Never works as well... it works, but it's not as economical or powerful.

Yes you do or the main ECU craps itself when it can't control the mixture and realises the injectors are turned off so goes into limp home or shut down mode. As for 'pump in the tank'... I have never yet seen a pump on an LPG system, it always relies on gas pressure to push the fuel through. Try googling "Ford ICOM pump in tank" it was an attempt at a sequential gas injection system worked well untill it went horribly wrong and wasn't worth fixing. IMPCO, Gas Research and OHG are all excellent names for LPG gear in Aus but don't get used much in the UK

Great bit of info there chaps, much obliged. The van (ex minibus) gets used for a variety of stuff as vans do though mainly transporting dirtbikes and camping. I've looked into camper conversion before and it seems you need to have fitted stuff, cooker and sink with running water etc. Whilst these are easy to achieve it would limit the space in the van which is already tighter than ideal as it's got seats in the back too as the family has outgrown the 3 in the front. Sometimes I like to cook alfresco too and I'm happy carrying water in a barrel, for what I need it for it's ideal as is plus we can talk without shouting over the noise of the engine as we did in the old DI's. From what I understand the rules have become tighter/ more closely scrutinised for converting as many will try to get through on this loop hole, I also heard that the loop hole may be no more though I'm not 100% on that source TBH. Tinleytech site looks great popup, I'll be speaking to them

DVLA stopped re regin vans as campers for a while unless they basicly had a propper camper bosdy on them, no longer can you just add a bed, water supply and wardrobe and get the V5 changed anyway campers have a weight limit on them as well, 2.1 ton fully laden i think it is ? under that is LEZ exempt over isn't (i think? best check on the LEZ site but there stuff about it on the transit forum). You couls (i have heard) just register it as a petrol (with a covering letter from "some" garage) that gives you a year till the next MOT (when it will be flagged up as a diesel again) to sell or do the swap ??
