Had a PM, and request to see if I knew what Poc Poc's were from a Forum Member...... Before I could go and Google "Abney and Teal" he had sent another PM with some screen grab pics. Could I , or would I considder having a go at making some of these little guys for his 3 year old daughter? She loves them, but there are no Poc Poc's out there to be bought. Some sample screen grabs. Of course I could not say no..... the story of my life? So I found some wood, which is off the front of an old Oak drawer I had rescued from a skip in Southampton a couple of weeks ago, I had other plans for the drawer, but this is as good a use as any. About 20mm thick, aged, and furniture grade.... perfect. I removed all the metal furniture from it and then proceeded to draw a few different sized outlines on a breakfast cereal box, cut out, transfer and then started cutting them out. I had been looking on Ebay for a few weeks for a cheap Fret saw / Scroll saw for the last few weeks, and then yesterday Mickey came around for a cuppa and I mentioned it to him, and he loaned me his so that I could get started. Drawer Front. Prototype.... they are buggers due to the curve on the neck, and the fact the Fret saw really is made for cutting thin stuff and balsa for moddeling. These little guys must take at least 45min to an hour each to complete right down to waxing if you add in all the process actions.... amazing how time flies. Getting the inner neck sanded by hand and getting the roundness fairly uniform takes time. What I like is that these toys will be very much Tactile and also allow the child to create its own stories. I then made a first one in Oak, and finished it right down to the waxing stage. This was while my mate Pete was turning himself some light switch pulls on the lathe. Posed up next to the Prototype, I am happy with the look and finish. I have made them between 70mm and 100mm high, so that they are a decent size to play with. Here is the rest of the group cut out. At this point we went off to fetch Fish and Chips for Dinner. The rest will be finished when I get a chance.

Our little girl watches the same show so I know what you're on about ;D Nice work as always Rian, it's a pity more toys are crafted from wood like they were years ago, I guess manufacturing cost make's it not do-able for toy companies.

All the official toys are due this summer, but the Abney and Teal dolls are not to my liking. I've wanted a set of Poc Pocs since seeing the first episode and Imthink I'm going to ask the local wood carver in my Dad's village in Spain to have a go with some made from olive wood. They need to be rounded so they can be held in the hands like a mug of Horlicks.

As said in the PM she is going to love these! and thank you very much for taking them on Hi Colin, a pleasure mate. I just hope they are up to the standard you are expecting. Carried on with the shaping of the rest of these today. The sanding is done in 3 stages, rough shaping, then smoothing down and lastly every piece is hand finished with one of those small triangular orbital type sanders and also a small "barrel " I made to get inside the tight curves. All done with the various grades op sanding, next job is to add the eyes and personalities..... yep, they are all different. Eyes done and first heavy wax coat done. You will note they all have a slightly different look. The large ones include Papa Poc Poc, Mamma Poc Poc and Uncle Poc Poc, then the kids are all different, with my favourite being the youngest sister who is both naughty, and loves playing in the dirt. There is also the eldest Poc Poc child from next door who comes to play with this gang. You can see, he is a bit lighter and not as adventurous. Once I have a destination for them, they get a final wax coat and then they will all be bundled up and sent off to their new home.

Thanks Mate, much appreciated. Have to say, making these toys for kids, I do wish I had some of my own to both impress, and make the envy of others. Used to love having toys no one else had when we grew up, as my dad used to make us stuff becuse there was not much money around. We had skateboards in 1969 that he had made from a pair of mums strap on rollerskates..... she used to be a waitress at a local drive in restaurant, on rollerskates.

Those are brilliant, RR was the last place I thought I'd be reading about Pocpocs! Thanks, never underestimate the power of RR's. If we get lucky, Colin will post up a pic or two, or a video of his daughter creating a new world controlled by the Poc Poc's ;D

Lovely Thanks Mate. Had another order PM'd in this week, and was meant to go to a Wood turning workshop for the day today, which did not happen. So I went to the shed and drew, cut out another two sets of Poc Poc's, which meant that the drawer front Oak is now finished as well. I will do the sanding and finishing when I get to be in the mood, as it takes time and is quite tedious. Two Tribes.

Well these were very well received (as expected ;D), sadly I didn't catch the initial excitement as he camera batteries were dead but got these of the Poc Poc's with their new (& very happy) owner; 'Looking for worms' (your guess is as good as mine ;D) Still looking 'Maybe there's worms down here' 'They're tired & it's their bedtime' Thanks again for these Rian, much appreciated. The finish is lovely, the detailing is fantastic & I can see these being a firm favourite for a very long time.........She wanted to take them to bed with her 'to make sure they were safe in their new home'.........Nothing quite like the imagination of a child is there. ;D

Collected this morning, thanks for meeting with me Rian. Bella will love these..............Pic's to follow when I get home tonight. ;D Great to meet you at "Stupid 'o Clock" and have a natter about stuff that matters. Thanks for the comment in the PM you sent, below. Hi Rian, Thank you for the Poc Poc's, I'm sure Bella will love them. I've just had a closer look at them at work & the quality is superb, you certainly have a skill Cajon Drums..... I still want to build one. I will look over the weekend to see if I can find that mechanism for the drum, and also look at creating a cam type mechanism. Hope we see a pic or two of Bella working her team of Poc Pocs. OK> EDIT : See you just posted while I was replying.Really glad your little mechanic likes her Poc Pocs.
