hi all I'm having problems getting my tc marina to run ok its standard except for a ported head, a electronic distributor from a 1.3 fiesta and some meshed ram pipes. Ive balanced the carbs with a balancer and set the mixture with a colour tune at idle. The problem i have is its totally flat over tick over and if you throttle it it will sometimes backfire through the inlet! IMO its running really weak, so Ive richened up the mixture and its ok on acceleration, but now fouls the plugs up if left ticking over for more than 5 mins. its got AAA needles at the mo, Ive got win su v2.4 and its saying i should use ABY needles. Any ideas where i can get some as my local mg place drew a blank, or a better idea for carburation other than the 40 webber route as cash is tight at the mo many thanks mart

I wouldn't park there too long....you'll get a ticket!! Sounds to me like the timing is retarded TBH. Does it start OK?

Sounds like the whole things retarded to me.....
you got a good fuel supply? float heights set? double check timing if not already done, i would have though that if it where carburettors it would have been affecting 2 cylinders more than another two (i assume its the twin SUs in the pic, and they are on a 1/2 1/4 or 1/3 2/4 manifold.

might be an idea to take em off and spend a bit of cash on some rebuild kits - new jets, float valve, maybe some new spings - strip em right down, clean em all up and get your car down to a good rolling road. this absolutly transformed one of my cars. well worth a little bit of spending.

Sounds like youve been doing all the right things as far as the balencing and colour tune goes.
You say you are using a fiesta distributor, this may be causing timing issues as TDC on your crank may not be TDC on the dizzy, ditch the timing gun and try doing the timing by ear. Youll be able to hear the engine pick up and die again at idle whilst turning the dizzy by hand, back it off to just before it peaks and then give the car a run.
If it does turn out to be fuelling, you can keep you needles and trim them to suit with wet and dry and a micrometer. Check which stations are lean and rub them back a touch.

Are the needles new? If they are scored at the fat end ( a possibility if you're running filterless) they could make the mixture relatively rich at idle. So setting the mixture "right" at idle could give a weak mixture further up the revs.
Having said that backfiring through the inlet sounds more like a timing issue? Had a similar problem with my TC engine but it was the dizzy points plate (std dizzy) moving around.
