Hello everyone,
just thought i would ask a quick one;
would anyone have any knowledge as to what is involved in swapping a mk1 1.3 with a "newer" 1.3 engine (1296 instead 1272) from a polo 6n (code ADX i believe)
_If I'm correct, the original gearbox will fit? (i have an 8p from a 1.3 gt) _Are the engine mounting points the same?
_In terms of the ECU, is there a way for me to use the original ignition setup+ecu but with bike carbs, meeting emissions and bypassing the injection ?
-DO i have to use the new alternator or will the original one fit?
just thought i would ask, i know it's a lot but well i'm curious.......
Thanks in advance people!!!

In terms of the ECU, is there a way for me to use the original ignition setup+ecu but with bike carbs, meeting emissions and bypassing the injection ? Keeping the standard ECU to only run the ignition wouldn't help emissions at all unfortunately. It's the carbs deciding how much fuel to chuck in, so it's the carbs that will control 90% of the emissions. The ignition timing isn't critical in getting a clean burn, just making the most of the power from it, which it wont do anymore with the carbs anyway. I'm affraid I can't answer the other questions with any degree of certainty, but if I remember right from owning my polo a few years ago the box and mounts should swap strait over, but I'd double check that first, my memory's a bit hazy on it.

The 6n engine is almost exactly the same as the ening in the 86c (mk3 polo) they are all interchange able, just engine mounts etc are you only headache - gearboxes are all interchange able into the mk1 golf. (all the early 1.3 6n engine should come with older design of box anyway with the rod change) Why not put a 1.6 AEE (MPI) engine into the mk1 Golf??

Thanks for the comments everyone- i guess i am interested in the 1.3 because of the engine size being close enough to mine and so no major weight issues, etc- having said that i would not mind a 1.6 if it fits straight in with the gt gearbox, only issue might be ignition....not sure how it would work really

There are loads of differences that make this a real pain. Lots of bolt patterns are different, including inlet manifold and engine mount.
If you wanna use a 1.3 then make it one from '86-94 cars, or the 1.4 from the MK3 Golf.
If you're prepared to go through the hassle of fitting a 6n engine then it doesn't matter whether you use the 1.3, 1.4 or 1.6 they're all fundamentally the same engine but for component measurements.
GT gearbox is short ratio, this'll just be frustrating with the torquier engines.
