Got a pair of 1 1/2" Su's for my Triumph herald 1360. Got a big valve head from a 1500 and tubular exhaust manifold.
How can I tell if I have Waxstat jets I want to buy a rebuild kit?.
Anybody fitted a 1500 UK (non USA) head on a 1300? Think I will need to skim it for a decent CR. Anybody done this? what did you skim off, What CR did you aim for? 9.5?
Cheers guy's

Here;s a useful photo I just found on the internet. Waxstat jet on the left. If you're getting new jets you might as well get normal ones rather than the waxstat type as its one thing less to go wrong. There are conversion jets made for this purpose as the linkage for the choke mechanism is slightly different.

Now to get my 15 yrs son and able assistant to go check our carbs. I'll get the right kit ordered before I get home from sunny climes.

Your 1500 head will need a big skim to get a decent CR. Not all 1500 valves are bigger 1500 Spit are not..... Some 1300 heads also had the bigger valve sizes and would need less of a skim. see: www.justdrive.ca/gt6/josh/13_15_engine_specs.html Best CR depends on the cam you are using. If sticking to the standard cam a bit less than 9.5 is probably wise. If upgrading to the mk3 Spit profile (worthwhile) then 9.5 is about right. If going to a wilder cam (probably not worthwhile without more mods) then you would need to go higher. Don't have any specific figures on skim amount - really you need to measure the chamber volume (use a burette or syringe plus sheet of perspex) and work it out. HS4 carbs are a bit big for the 1300 unless well modified. 2 x HS2 will give more torque or even a single HS4 on the Dolomite log manifold. Cheers Nick

Cheers mate
I have a couple of spare unknown camshafts to send off and intend to go for the spitfire regrind. Will end up having to measure the combustion chambers as you said with a pipette as I don't know if this head was ever skimmed. It is a gasflowed big valve head tuned and modified years ago. The valves are not standard size. I will measure them when I get home from Egypt end of next week I hope. I have a pair of HS2's as well. I'll try both and see how it goes.
