Evening all Could anyone recomend a decent immobiliser? Really need to get one. An Immobiliser/Alarm would be OK as long as you can set the siren to not go off. Cheers!

If you just want one to stop people nicking your pride and joy any car accessory shop should be able to sort you out with one you can fit yourself but if you need to get a Thatcham approved one for your insurance you will need to have it fitted by a Thatcham approved installer. I would recommend Meta as they are quite cheap but work well although Cobra are good too (but a bit dearer!)

I wouldn't bother if I were you, unless your insurance says you *have* to have one.
They're a PITA and often put a strain on the electrics in older cars - I've disconnected the system on the 75 'cos all it does is flatten my battery.
Best solution is to remove the dizzy king lead or get one of the quick-release battery connectors with a low current bypass for radio settings etc.

One of the best immobilisers I've ever had was the one fitted to my MkI Golf Cabrio.
There was a touch pad hidden under the carpet - if you didn't know where exactly to press on the carpet to trigger the switch, you couldn't start the car.
Genius.

Someone I was talking to had fitted a Halfords alarm jobby - one of the sirens that's motion activated and sets all the lights/horn off too if someone jolts or disturbs the car. Seemed to work really well and was only about 40 quid IIRC, might be worth looking up as an interim until you get a proper Thatcham installed, if you were to go that way? Had a good flashing light in the dash too, which you can buy a kit for from Maplins, if you're just looking for the suggestion of the presence of an alarm system......

I seen that flashing LED on the Maplins website whie I was looking for an immobiliser. I think it was about £2.50.
A mate of mine had a switch near the clutch pedel in his Capri, if anyone got in the car with you or was watching it just looking like he was starting it normal, but as he got in he was knocking it with his foot.

I've had nothing but trouble with immobilisers - two Meta and a Toad have had to be disconnected due to devoping faults. The Meta was worst - it used to immobilise the car at random, the first time happened in the fast lane of the motorway.
I'd go for hidden switch(es) and a couple of flashing LEDs - you can make your own up to automatically start flashing when the ignition is turned off.
A workmate had his Nova wired so the low tension to the coil was fed from a particular standard accessory switch so the car wouldn't start without that accessory turned on.
