I'm looking to get a new motor in the new year so just throwing some ideas about. My wife fancies another mini or a sharknose BMW and I fancy something involving an essex V6. To keep running costs down I thought about running a diesel merc on chip fat but then started thinking of lpg. How does this go with an old motor that hasn't been converted to unleaded? Most classics should have some lead memory but does lpg speed up valve seat damage?

The hot set up here in OZ is to run an upper cylinder lube system.I think Redex even made something similar years ago. I used used auto transfluid on a GM V8 in a work truck running LPG.No worries about burnt valves etc etc . I have a mate running LPG dedicated sysyem on his merc 6.3 ,which has an upper cylinder lube device and it's been running this since 1998.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

There's a chap with a 1980 Saab 99 that has thousands of miles on it running on LPG with no valve seat issues. However, as the car has an alloy head as standard, the seats might be a little harder than those in an iron head anyway? Saab did change in about 1985 to harder seats though, so they're not the best in there.

A year ago on ebay someone was selling a V6 MK1 granny with an LPG conversion on it, that had actually been converted in the early 70`s. I think it was to run from LPG gas bottles. From what I remember it was basically a standard engine. I also know a bloke who used to work for shell in the early 70`s and did a lot of developing and testing work on running cars on LPG and they never had any valve failures. As I recall ford stopped doing Focus`s with LPG due to valve wear and I have known a few other modern cars(unleaded only) suffering from worn valves running LPG so I think a lot of it must be down to set ups and individual engines.

Cheers for the replies. I'm still undecided as to what to do! I may be moving due to work so I don't know whether my next vehicle will be for commuting or just pleasure. I'm leaning towards a Mk1 granada at the moment but I wouldn't mind a zephyr/zodiac. Mind you when I get my beetle back on the road I may just keep that. decisions, decisions!
