OK so I left the ZS out for two weeks without starting it so I guess I'm not surprised. Popped out in it earlier. It started bang on - so far so good but boy is it idling badly. Off down the road on 3 cylinders I thought, OK it'll warm up, but no. Tootling along the bye pass ona trailing throttle it seems to be OK (sounds like it's back on 4) but the slightest throttle and its all over. Stinks of fuel too, which isn't surprising if one cylinder isn't at home.
It's been pretty wet the past week or so.. So what should I be checking over the weekend. Got my first ever competitive sprint event on Sunday 22nd, so need it back and running next week!!

Is the dizzy cap dry? I had a similar problem on one of the 131s i used to have. Took it off, wiped it out and put it back on and it was fine. Could be something as simple as that.

it's the running fine not under load that's odd. I think.

My polo has started playing up recently only when it's raining heavily...feels like it's running out of petrol but if I lift off and then back on again it's okay but it keeps happening until the engine has warmed up. I've got a standard air filter in a custom housing with a fine mesh surround and the coil has been moved to the scuttle under cover. Also binned the charcoal canister and associated pipework. Any ideas? or should I just give it a nice dousing of WD

Both these cars have symptoms that could be caused by a number of faults. Running on 3 cylinders at idle and a fuel smell kinda indicates an inlet manifold leak to me..do you hear a hissing sound? When I'm looking for engine misfire faults I always check out the mechanicals first..ie compressions, valve clearances ect., then ignition system, then fuel. What sort of Polo are you talking about gotwood? I know the oldens used to suffer a lot with the points gap closing up.

Id say waek spark caused by water in the dizzy, lots of WD should sort it. Be careful as unburnt fuel in the bores could cause bore wash, and no one likes that!

My wagon does that - it's a dodgy ignition lead and the HT lead is on it's way out as well. The end of one lead burnt away and I made a temporary fix, months ago........I must but a new set of leads. The HT lead leaks! You can get that warm tingly feeling by grasping it firmly.

My G40 used to show the same symptoms.... would run alright on a wet morning until you wanted some beans then it'd stutter and almost die. Turned out to be a cracked dizzy cap letting in water. Took an AA callout to find it though
