If you go for the s/h engine how do you know its a properly rebuilt one and not just some traveller lash up?
I'd rebuild the existing motor, even though it'd cost £££££, Id be happy knowing it'd been done properly!

I would look for a second hand motor, as said before, I often find that the cost of a rebuild and parts its worth the risk, dissapointing if you end up with one thats not a lot better, but I have bought engines that look terrible outside but have been great, and the opposite! As cobblers said, I have had experience too of rebuilding a couple of things which I made worse- a mk1 diesel golf which never started from cold unless I ran it down hill at 30 mph (as a result had to park half mile away) and a gearbox I made from 3 for a talbot sunbeam- one whined like a smashed cat,one jumped out of 2nd, the other 3rd, I managed to create 1 box that that did it all....doh!
