Hi all, I have a 1985 230E Mercedes and am looking at reducing my fuel consumption, and wandered if a manual choke would help? Does anyone know if this can be done? I had a Golf CL4 before this, and toyed with the idea of Webers and Manual choke, but got rid before I had the chance. Any ideas welcome. Thanks

If it's a 230E, it's fuel injection (E stands for Einspritzung I think...) so there isn't a choke as such on your car, but a cold start arrangement. What kind of fuel economy are you getting? The injection system will be more efficient than any carb, providing it's all working as it should be. If it's a 230 with carb, the automatic choke should be as efficient (if not more so) than a manual choke. However they can be troublesome if they start to go wrong. There seems to be very scant information on the auto choke set-up that the Stromberg / Pierburg carbs use on Mercedes cars. I'd say the only realistic way to convert it to manual choke if you absolutely wanted to would be to change the carb for an earlier 175CD off of some other car, although you'd then have to figure out throttle linkages as these are bound to differ, needle profiles, jet sizes, etc etc. Not impossible but perhaps not a worthwhile mod if your aim is to get more efficiency. I've swapped carbs about and had success with a bit of experimentation with needle sizes etc, but my aim wasn't to get more efficiency - just to get it to work! ;D

Thanks for the info. I am as technically minded as a goldfish, but on a learning curve all the time. I get about 290 miles from a full tank, so about 28ish to the gallon? It has a slightly rough idle, so possible blocked injector? A tin of 44K should sort if it is.

No problem. I would think low to mid-30's mpg would be achievable on a run with a 230E so some fettling might be in order. If the injector cleaner doesn't work you could always get them ultrasonically cleaned - they can get a bit "dribbly" ;D. Not meaning to state the obvious but a new air filter makes a difference. Also if the fuel metering unit sensor plate can get gummed up with curse word and cause issues - easily cleaned with a bit of carb cleaner.

Well I'm getting 18-22mpg on my commute (6.6gal, 125mile/week) But my commute is 25 mile return, mixed town/country lane/bypass with 25 roundabouts! So all stop start and really not the best commute to get decent mpg Oh, and hilly..

Thats quite impressive. The roundabouts I mean!!! I do a 40mile round trip, country lanes, dual cabbageways and only 6 roundabouts. I work 7 days on the trot, so spend about 60 quid a week on fuel. Thought about LPG conversion, but would not be a petrol head then!

The council just love roundabouts here Even in my mk3 golf diesel I was only getting low to mid 30's! And if I use "the toy" I get about 6mpg! So 18-22 is quite good for me.. (god I wish the price of petrol would go down )

Just a thought, have you tried putting a bit more air in your tyres?? 4 or 5 psi extra is normally good for 2 or 3 extra mpg

When's thge last time the valves have been adjusted? Ignition has been replaced? Injection has been tuned? Air filter chnage etc. etc. All contributing factors to poor resp. good MPG
