Hi all, Does anyone know if you can upgrade the automatic 4 speed gearbox on a Mercedes 230E/W123, and if so, how easy and which gearbox could be used? I use my Merc every day, and suffer from empty wallet syndrome. Anything to boost the MPG would be useful. The 4 speed box in there revs at about 3.5k at 60mph, so the fuel guage tends to move faster than the rev counter.
No I don't drive fast!
Any ideas welcome.
Thanks

No, no 5-speed auto. The only 5-speed was a manual. So either convert to a manual 5-speed, or maybe put a taller back axle in - that would make accelerating hard work though.

My grandad used to have a 5 speed manual w123 200 in beige - big ends knocked at about 88k!
Not seen them with a 5 speed auto though

The 5 speed auto (available from the late W124 on, about 1992 or 1993 IIRC) is noit a 'real' 5 speed box, it's more like a 4 speed with an electronically controlled & engaged overdrive as 5th. At a guess, I'm sure you couldget it in there and get it runing - justdependson howfar you'r willing to go. Custom mounts, custom prop shaft, faffing with electronics, etc. (that 'box needs a speed signal p.e.)... In the end a manual 5-speed will require similar amountsof work, if converting a auto car to manual 5 speed (pedals, gearbox mount and different prop shaft etc. and more) - but these parts are available 2nd hand... Longer diff is an option too But will lose flexibility and decrease acceleration... (and need an appropriate speedo to that diff)...

As above really. If your not too bothered about ultimate acceleration then another rear diff would be soooo much easier than gearbox/pedal box/ cables/ linkages etc. At 60mph my car sits around 1,500 rpm and has no problem at all with acceleration. Its just not as quick as some thats all.

Thats an idea. Any recommendations for a donor Diff? Not worried about speed, cruising to work is fun!
