I'm not sure if the engine in the Viva, a 2.0 litre pinto which I think is from a late model Sierra has electronic ignition. There is a small black box which has a fair few wires coming out of it which I think may have something to do with the ignition but I didn't bother tracing them The reason I need to know is because I tried to get the rev-counter in it to work but when I wired it to the negative side of the coil it didn't work and if it has electronic ignition there is normally a specific feed wire?? So did late Sierras have electronic ignition and if so what colour wire would I need to connect the rev-counter feed wire to? Ps Are Lucas sport coils any good and would I need a ballasted or non ballasted one?

Not sure on the definitive answer to this - but for a quick check take the dizzy cap to see if you have a set of contacts in there...if you haven't then you've probably got leccy ignition.
I gather you gave your rev counter an earth as well?

I gather you gave your rev counter an earth as well? Yeah the counter has four wires coming from it, and I googled and came up with a rev counter fitting guide which states that, White = Back light (wired to a dash light feed and light works) Red = 12V Ignition (Wired to fag lighter live feed so live on Position 1/2) Black = Earth (Wired to negative battery terminal) Green = Rev counter feed (Wired to negative coil terminal) I will try taking the dizzy cap off and check for points, should have thought of that earlier

I've always wired tach's to leccy ignitions to the coil negative and haven't had a problem.
And yeah, the wiring you've been given is pretty much par for the course for aftermarket tach's.

It might depend on your rev counter. Is it a standard rev counter or aftermarket. If its a standard one then it might be expecting a coil feed from a ballasted resistor circuit and they wont work from 12V. I only speak from my experience with my MK1 escort, supposedly there are ways around this but I couldnt find a way to do it.

It's an aftermarket one, I bought another one today, one of those huge ones that go up to 11K RPM and have a shift light as well ;D The one in the car at the moment wasn't working when I got it, and I checked and rewired it properly but still no joy If anyone has got a Sierra Haynes manual lying around can they check it and see what colour the rev counter wire is, I am going to get a manual of E-bay just for the engine part of it so if no one has got one I will have by next week so it's no biggy

OK, I'm on it! I had an aftermarket rev counter in my 1600L which was wired to the coil negative terminal and worked fine. Sounds like the same ignition system - is it a fairly flat black box screwed to the bodywork with a little loom coming out? And the distributor has a couple of wires coming out with a multiplug on the end? Not all Sierras had rev counters, and my old chap's P100 didn't (they use that ignition set-up) so there may not be a "factory" wire for it. Shouldn't be a problem though! Will dig out a Haynes manual this morning.
