Hi All, Just after a bit of advice on behalf of my Dad. He's looking to improve the performance of his bay window camper, mainly hill climbing ability really. The engine is a standard 1600cc aircooled twin port in good order and he's looking for advice regarding a carb (twin carb?) that would pep it up a bit. He's not after 1/4 mile drag racing action, engine swaps, re-bores, turbo's, NOS or anything like that, just something to improve it a little in terms of acceleration. As it has a full length lifting roof, full camping interior, bike rack etc etc it weighs a lot so it's never going to be a speed demon with a 1600 in it but presumably there are better carbs available than the standard setup? He doesn't mind sacrificing a little economy in pursuit of power as it currently gets around 30mpg on a long run once warmed up - best we've had out of one of these things! Any ideas? Cheers Stu

Get a manifold for a 32/36 progressive weber, and buy a 28/30 dftm weber off an '86 - 90 ford escort / orion / fiesta from a scrappy. I paid a tenner for my carb and £25 for the manifold second hand. You'll need to file the bolt holes on the carb a smidge to make it fit, and plumb in a cable for the manual choke, but they're a fantastic carb, jetted spot on for the 1600 aircooled. I've run one on my wizard for 3 1/2 years with no problems whatsoever, its loads better on fuel than the stocker too. Make sure you still have a vac advance dizzy rather than a crappy bosch 009, as the carb is vac. secondary choke Mike

I've got a set of 36 IDF webers on my 1600, got them off an Alfa 33 i think. Sound good, and actually IMPROVED fuel consumption ( unless i nailed it ! )

I've got just what he needs Solex PII's from a 1960's Porsche 912 , 40mm and not to be confused with Kadron 40's, these are twin chokes!!!! Basicly, the Solex version of the weber IDF Off a 1584ish cc engine, so should work fine, with beetle filter, fanimold and linkage (included)

i know a lot of people have probs with the progressive carb
i would look for a set of twin 36's, preferably DRLA Dells. (these are usually the ones off an alfa, but need to be modified slightly to work on an a/c VW)

48 IDAs! Go on, you know it makes sense ;D I'd vote (seriously this time) for a pair of ex-alfa 36 IDFs, properly set up, or a pair of Kadrons if you can find a good set cheaply

This is an interesting thread as I was in the same boat (until my engine gave up about 6 months ago!) and have been considering improving the fueling when it's back together again. I have a Bosch 009 dizzy and have to say I'm not overly impressed with it.

Id suggest either 34 icts or K-dud 40s as they both have electric chokes and being a twin carb set up will be more fuel efficient than a 32/36.

over 100 different suggestions! Bet you know exactly what to do now Stu!!!! Clearly there is no definitive answer! The outcome may well depend on what bits and bobs my Dad and/or his pals have lying around from previous cars. By the way, anyone got any pics of their alternative carb installs on aircooled dubs?

Think my brother wants these PII's, so that means your next best bet is a set of dellortos 36mm ones are ideal, IF you can find a set
