heh, had to chuckle. Maybe its a west country thing... but I have seen this car I like at a garage in Somerset. It is a somewhat improbable trade in they have. So I email the guy, get some pics and more details, and ask the question "any reason you know of this shouldn't make it back to Nottingham under its own power?" I get the extra pics but no answer on the question. Fair enough its a trade in.
anyway I comment I may be able to view it Monday (this was Tuesday) and I check some arrangements and phone to confirm car is still available etc.
Its not the first time I phoned but it goes like this...
the old guy answers the phone, puts you on to whichever son it is deals with that type of query - Sayuls or Waaarkshap. Said son then takes over.
So I say "is it still there, as I was planning coming Monday" and the chap says "oh, its you is it, good, yes, we're holding onto it for you until then." nice. "We phoned up the garage that used to maintain it for the previous owner, they are a little country place, been looking after it for years for him, say it will be fine on a long run back up to yours".
Just a couple of little examples of old fashioned motor trade courtesy I thought was pretty much extinct in this modern world.
Holding a car for a (potential) customer on their word, checking its history etc.
Anyway, hope this bodes well for it...
More will be revealed Monday.

I'm hoping for a gallon of cider thrown in to seal the deal.

I'm hoping for a gallon of cider thrown in to seal the deal. We don't do 'gallons' down here. You'll have a flagon of undetermined capacity/ABV and like it. Oh, and stop playing your cards so close to your chest. What's the car, dammit? ;D Chris

We used to adopt the exact same ethos for our customers, even ordering/buying stuff in because they've said they want 'X,Y &Z', but unfortunately now due to the increasing amount of numpties and 'flywheel kickers' we don't do any special orders now without deposit, and nothng is sold until it's paid for. ie, first one with the cash, gets it! Not how we like to do business, but a sign of the times sadly. It's nice to know there are stil people operating like that tho

I don't like to "jinx" deals by announcing them before they are done. All I might buy is a returning single rail ticket.
I don't think anyone will be unduly shocked.

That's Bristol, not Somerset. A subtle but important difference down here :-) It's good to see old fashioned customer service isn't completely dead. I took a car to be MOT'd and halfway through my MOT chap popped out and said 'At the moment it's failed on a headlight bulb. They are a pig to change as you have to take the bumper off. We would have to charge you but here's the toolbox if you want to have a go' :-)

WEST COUNTRY WORDS
Trah'r - Tractor
Peh'rhl - Petrol.
The middle of the word disappears somewhere. Presumably into a lovely field to drink cider.
Had some good times in Bristol \ Somerset.

Only after I left Somerset did I realise that not all garages run this way. Plus for the record everybody in Somerset speaks perfectly normally, it's Devon you want to watch out for. Oh and Po, Gloucestershire, South West? You're on glue boy
