Thought id become an ex lurker! Be gentle. After playing with old fords some years back and a break for kids and house i had been thinking of a new toy. Was thinking of cheap mx5, but saw advert for this on club cappo for £400, was down in mid wales so thought i'd go take a look. First time i saw her, doesnt look bad at all. Was shocked at how small they even up close! Looked good to me (after my 100e it looked mint!) so arranged to pick it up the next week. Trailer hired from these guys for £50 bargain and hooked up to the family wagon. Was really cold and the first trailer i tried was frozen up so got this brand new one. No snow in lancashire but lets see how the trip to Wales goes... No snow at all, got it loaded and headed back. Thanks espresso, top man! Has it shrunk in a week?? Looks like a mini Griffith! After some passenger rides for my co pilots, its tucked up in it's new home, 675cc of pent up turbo power. Strip down begins, got the seats and carpets out. Again not too bad i think, they all seem to rot behind the seats Bit more on the strut tops There was a small hole in the sill which turned into BBBBZZZZZZ....which turned into The famous triple skinned sill, rotten all along bottom edge. Thats where i'm up to whilst i wait for some steel sheet. Any advice on rustproofing the repairs? Have got some zinc spray but what about seam sealer and painting. Any rustproofing stuff seems mega money!

just wondered if anyone had any preference with POR15 etc as they seem shockingly pricey?

I used POR15 for sealing a fuel tank, but before I painted the underside of my car body and chassis I did a bit of research and decided to use Rust Bullet instead www.rustbulletuk.com/None of them are particularly cheap, but I preferred the performance and ease of preparation before applying the paint.

Thread resurrection! The SLOW progress continues... RH inner sill done. Rear end jacked up and stripped. A few holes, mostly from rust encroaching from the rusted out sills. Holes on the outside... And on the inside. Passenger side Drivers side cut out and partially repaired Rear inner wheel arch rusted out...I was going to keep the rust as some perverted record of "weight saving" but gave up after the third bucket. These things know how to rust! And partially repaired. It aint pretty but will be covered by the bumper All rear suspension dropped and carefully catalogued (read stuffed under the bench which i will surely regret!) Apart from the rust I'm getting to love this thing; everything adjustable and built lightweight. Cant wait for first thrash! Stripped and painted the rear subframe using POR-15. Great stuff but bloomin pricey, brings it up nice and shiny though. God help people with proper sized cars. Done the fuel tank too which sites above the subframe and had some pinholes on the seam. Hoping the POR15 will cure this and will keep a close eye on it when i put some more fuel in. The trickiest bits (that i havent got pics for from the outside but can be seen in the pics above)is the mounts for the subframe. They are captive nuts on brackets you can only get to by cutting the bulkhead from the inside. The metal between the nuts is triple skinned and bulging with rust inside. Cut this out leaving nuts in situ, and welded fresh in to make sure these mounting points remain in the same place. As it stands now, welded, painted and new brake lines in place. Ready for reassembly and dropping off axle stands. Be nice to see daylight for firsttime in 8 months, if only to wash off the layer of grinder-disc/rust dust!

Bit more progress.... rear subframe stripped and cleaned, couple of coats of POR15. "New" bushes by Tigerseal. Rear end finished and back on, time to start the nearside sill What came out My nightmare..... And its not just the sill, no there rust on the inside too! Hole in the floor and down edge of trans tunnel Deadline 4th July. Trip to Yorkshire for Tour de France then blast to wonderful Mid Wales for Monty street party and Mums 75th.... Did have some arch and wheel plans but put on hold as apparently unable to weld/redrill Cap hubs. Wrong type of Cast Iron apparently, anyone know any better, or know who can make some adapters that arent £250 a set?? Plan B is to setup as standard (so need some arch repairs) then get onto the mods.

Good god. This thread makes me never want one of these cars, you're doing some epic work there! When are you releasing a kit of plans to weld a Capp from a set of sheet steel in 200 easy stages?

A bit of progress, floor and 2 inner sections of near side sill done, but not painted. Trying to do all the structural stuff, before getting some thinner steel to to the outer sills, and arch repairs. Can anyone help with this?? Ive been told this cant be plug welded and redrilled for wheel of choice (slightly smaller pcd) as its the wrong type of cast iron. Can anyone offer any advice (not just "wheels that fit"!) as the Capp has 4 x 114.3 pcd and as such very limited choice? Anyone know of any decent budget adapters? As it stands now swapped round on the axle stands, ready to drop the subframe off the front, leaving the engine dangling. This is tonights job so may have more updates tomorrow.

Wow, I knew these things rusted, but blimey, that is unbelievable for a 'modern' car! Top work though, and hats off to you for sticking with it.

Good work on fighting the rust the proper way.
In terms of wheels there's plenty of choice out there in 4 x114.3 (especially from classic J cars) unless it's a strange offset that's causing you problems?

Man I wish we could get those over here(Australia) for 400 bucks or even $1000... Being a suzuki spare parts person, I could get all the parts straight from Japan for cheaper than dealer pricing

After some grunts and curse words, out it comes. The good thing is it just needs wire brushing and some more liquid gold POR15 The bad thing Out of the 8 bolts holding it on , one was too far gone to undo, and being captive i couldnt soak in oil first However looking at whats left it doesnt really matter! Some fabrication needed... This is the good side Both captive nuts still intact, and like the rear subframe I can be tack some new metal in to keep the original mounting face and nuts in place and add new metal in around it for strength. Dodgy phone photo sorry but you can see the drivers side sill repair in this (which still needs tidying and painting/sealing) Slowly slowly, catchy monkey!
