my daily (99 astra 1.6 8v) has decided to attempt to kill me with pneumonia! radiator expansion tank level bang on yet the engine stays cold and the heater blows cold regardless of how long its been running... thermostat stuck open is all i can think of but thought you spanner wielding geniuses (geneii? ) might come up with something i didnt....any ideas gratefully received!!

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

Start the car and let it idle for 20 minutes or so until the radiator is warm top to bottom - Does the heater work now (even just a bit)? If so, the stat has failed open.
If not, feel the hoses to and from the heater matrix - are they both hot? If so, then your problem is probably the selection flap. Can you hear it move and clack from end to end when you choose the temperature?
If one hose is warm and the other cold, then the Matrix could be blocked.

does it have a temp gauge or is it just that the heater isn't getting warm? If its the later, I'd check that the heater control valve isn't stuck (common on fords, don't know if Vaux's suffer with it)

More than likely a failed stat then, but after half an hour I'd have assumed it would have warmed the water up a bit!

First things i think of when there is no hot water in the hoses - an airlock, or the thermostat.

I repaired one of these fairly recently with thermostat trouble. I can't remember how the temperature gauge behaved, but there was no circulation in the cooling system. Cooling fan did not work because of this. As a result the system pressurised and made the hoses very hard and would eventually blow out coolant but only after a fair run. It survived surprisingly well at low speeds/shorter distances. You definitely need to run it and check if top and bottom rad hoses heat up and if the rad itself is hot to touch at the top and bottom.
If its the same as the one I repaired the thermostat lives behind the cambelt and cambelt covers. Not a 5 minute job sadly but a DIY mechanic could do it. the other stupid thing with it was that the cambelt was tensioned by rotating the waterpump, housed in the engine block. This was inevitably seized in, so had to be forcibly removed and then replaced, but not a bad thing as the whole set up looked factory fitted on my car.

I had this when I got mine last year and yes thermostat failed open, the 1.6 8v is known for this. It is about a 2 hour job to do with the book of lies by your side. This was the first timing belt I had ever done and I did the water pump and tensioner (sp) as well and did it in that time. There is a 'cheat' by putting in a second thermostat in the top hose, links to some info below. Depends on if your car is disposable or not: www.mk3oc.com/forum/showthread.php?41713-In-top-hose-Stat-bodge-for-SOHC-Astraswww.astraownersclub.com/vb/showthread.php?t=241945&page=2Hope that is of some help. John.

old boy from down the road fixed it. tapped the ally pipe leading eo the stat housing gently with a rubber mallet. big plop noise and the water level dropped in the expansion bottle big time. back flushed the system - LOADS of cack came through. top up with antifreeze and clean water...ran the engine up and bobs your mothers brother. sorted apparently he had 4 or 5 and all but one did it! gotta love the elderly aintcha
