Hi All,
So, I'm using an old twin cam head from an engine that died a few years back on a new project engine for one of my motors. Now the reason for using this head is it has new valves etc as I had a cam belt snap! The problem is the head has been sitting in the garage since the engine blew the bottom end and so its grim dirty! It needs a damned good clean out but I'm unsure as to how to go about doing this as the valves and springs are still in place! the Tappets I can remove no issues and the Cams are not in anyway.
Can I just steam clean it as it is or will that do bad things to the valves and their relevent springs?? any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers Rich ;D

Personally I'd dismantle and clean each part seperate but if you have access to a steam cleaner then used that. Worse that might happen is components could start rusting so give them a quick spray with WD40. Just be careful that when cleaning you don't do it on the floor so that crud will get into the passageways or if on a bench etc then it doesen't get knocked to the ground. Of course a manual inspection and blow though of oilways with an airline before fitting is recommended. I believe a dishwasher would also do an excellent job paul H

I can vouch that it does hurt when your wife throws something at you after using the dishwasher not to wash dishes!
Also, even a tiny amount of engine oil goes a VERY long way inside a DW! Ours never really recovered and the white plastic was forever a dull shade of grey. A constant reminder for me of the error of my ways every time I used the DW!!
Having said that it did a cracking job of cleaning the car parts!! If I were regularly rebuilding engines I'd look on fleabay or gumtree and see if I could pick up one cheap.

Try and find a friendly engine builder with an acid dip tank where you can leave it for half a day

Bio washing powder is very good for cleaning oily parts, just wear gloves when using it!

I wash my parts with brushes, steelwool and bio diesel in a pump-sprayer. In a plastic tub. Bio diesel (the real stuff, not SCO/WVO ;D) is a good detergent. But wear a GOOD respirator! And covere everything in old clothes; it stinks like hell ;D Final rinse with brake cleaner and all is shiney Mini gearbox & transfere case for example: I'm not using the dish washer anymore. The water dries off too quickly and leaves marks. Also I have the feeling that greasy gunk get'S just distributed, not washed off. Maybe I've used the wrong chemicals? Anyway; aluminium & normal washing powder (for dishes) etc. is NOT a good idea ;D Don't ask... I'm not cleaning my parts with water again. Only bio-diesel & brake cleaner, the old fashioned way.

Immerse it in Paraffin overnight, then use a soft/medium brush to clear off the gunk. Used this technique on a Bug engine a while back with good results.
