Just got me one of these with no doubt a few problems to come. Starts with a very rough idle, if you keep the revs over 1200 then it is fine. It runs fine when warm idles possibly a little rough at 800 rpm but not too noticeable. It pulls well, good mpg etc. I will be giving it a service and was wondering if anyone had had this sort of problem before. Car details 1998 V70 Tdi SE 120,000 miles. I believe it has the VW engine so will need a manual for that as well! Now pics: Standard: Very nice: Pick up render: Thanks for looking, even more thanks if you can help Edited for the title.

The other car to use this engine is the Audi A6 C4 platform. The engine code for the 140 bhp version also used in the Volvo is AEL. You should probably have a rummage around on here www.audifans.net/forum-3.htmlIt's probably been answered before on there. Rough idle can sometimes be the result of a slack pump drive belt (at the flywheel end of the engine) though not normally affected by temperature that much. At 120k it's barely run in. Mine (in a '96 A6) is now on 231K and still fighting fit. Plenty make it well into the 300s without major attention. Nick

would seam like glow plugs as they usually stay on for a while until the engine gets warmer, a good engine will start even if one glow plug doesn't work.

The dynamic pump timing needs checking/adjusting on these every 10000 miles. The first thing you need to do is make sure its spot on.

The dynamic pump timing needs checking/adjusting on these every 10000 miles. The first thing you need to do is make sure its spot on. After having a good read about the link Nick posted and a few other places I now know this is the first port of call that needs checked. I believe Volvo did a few changes regards the OBD reading around 1997 which my car is so it may not be read by some things but others! Anyone near Dundee have the stuff to read it before I go and buy the wrong thing? John
