Well, I took the 75 out for a sneaky test-drive earlier. Only to find out the brakes are a bit knackered. I tried several times to lock it up doing emergency stops from 30-odd mph, but never managed it - the pedal went to the floor with very little effort.
Checking the brake fluid - it's a lovely watery black consistency at the moment.
Looks like I'll be chucking it at my local garage to have him look at the rear callipers and change the fluid, then.
Could have done without the hassle, as the missus has just brought a very sick sounding 156 home. My diagnosis is that the catalyst 'brick' has come loose in it's casing. So that's another job for the local garage, then.
Fortunately, a cat for a 156 is only £68+VAT.

Bleeding the lines is a fairly simple matter man, if the pedal is going all the way to the floor, you may also want to check the adjustment on the rears (if they're drums). Start bleeding from the furtherest away wheel to the cylinder, one of the little bleed valves comes in VERY handy, you don't need two people to bleed, slip the little sucker on and press the pedal until the new fluid comes out.

Not drums, evil inboard discs on the back. I'm *not* doing them on the drive with an axle stand!
If you've seen the underside of the rear end of a transaxle Alfa, you'll understand why.
I'm almost tempted to do the cat on the 156 myself, but past experience suggests it's not really a good idea without investing in a good set of tall ramps.

Nah, bleeding is the least of my worries.
I'm a tad more concerned that the brake fluid looks more like watered down black ink than brake fluid.....
I also reckon the rear calipers are sticking, too.

auto five, thats a really bad idea, brake fluid is jolly hydroscopic and will absorb a large amount of water making it virtually useless if you leave the cap off over night.

well thats how ive bleed spongey brakes for about 20 years - and it works every time
i don't leave the cap off - just unthread it - to allow air bubbles to leave the fluid
BUT if its bad practise - don't do it kids
