I bought a peugeot 106 dirty cheap and it had a few faults, but before I pull stuff apart. I wanted to see if anybody can narrow things down a bit:
1. I've been told but not confirmed this fault yet, that if you drive and the car warms up and stop, it struggles to turn over, but if you release the expansion bottle cap there is wooshing sound (I know some is acceptable) but then you go to start it and its fine.. after 3 mins or so... also there is a bit of water in the oil ( now i'm not sure if thats just cos its sat for a bit or not yet but could the water in the oil just be the waterpump??
2. curse word poor brakes, I think rear cylinders and a bleed should cure this as the front pads and disks are good and the calipers are free, but anybody else come across this??
3. started the car up, and there is gurgling behind the dash, sounds like air in the system am I right?

1 and 3 sound like the headgasket has gone, possibly due to a faulty water pump number 2 is a usual 106 complaint, and none of them other than the gti with rear discs has a particularly good pedal unless you mean it doesnt actually have very good brakes full stop ;D

No its dangerously bad, i'm used to non servo not stopping as well, no this is curse word poor, i'm pretty sure 2 cylinders and good bleed should sort it.
I am 90% certain is head gasket, will throw a water pump at it as well

Sounds like your on the right track with this one. Might be worth bleeding the system and checking for leaks first if you haven't already, always worth doing what you can for free before putting any money down

A head gasket on one of these is pretty straightforward all things considered. A gasket set is about £35, cambelt is a tenner ish.

if its the 1 litre youll probably pick an engine up cheaper than a gasket set and cambelt on 106 moaners from someone whos vtr/s'd theirs

It sounds like the HG has gone, but check both fluids first. I would only fit on a Payen or Genuine Pug gasket myself (I think one guy here had a cheap HG let go on his 205 in a couple of months) but it's your cash . Many people forget to bleed the Pug system after it has been refilled with coolant which can also kill them.

Hi you're right about the head gasket definately gone you may get away with just a new gascket and bolts, but the guggling behind the dash might be why it's gone check the carpet for water because the heater matrix may have gone, common thing on PSA stuff!

i agree deffo head gasket issue,,,pressurising the cooling system and water/oil mix...but as said check for other signs of leaks such as heater matrix.
as for the brakes,,,if both rear wheel cylinders are leaking you'll never get a half decent pedal,,,do a total fluid change on all 4 wheels as i'm guessing you haveair in the master cylinder too,,,when all is good it should at least try and lock the fronts when max pedal pressure is applied.

|
if at first you don't succeed...use a gas axe!

Whereabouts is the the waterleak likely to be on the carpet? Ill check this evening when I get home from work. Ill drag it to work to bleed them properly, once I replaced them!

The 106 I look after has 3-stud hubs, and even with new discs, calipers, rear cylinders and pads, all to OEM spec from a well known German, Swedish and French retailer, were still poor until there was some heat in the discs. This is no good when you've been motorway for 60 miles without touching the brake pedal (anticipation FTW) and then someone suddenly chops you as they're overtaking you because they want THAT junction! I changed the pads for Halfords ones, and they're much improved with good bite from cold.

Did you get Vetech pads Macoli? They are not great, but they are still an improvement over any EBC offering.

Just had another gander and found one of the rocker posts is snapped, where the headbolt goes through and the oil feeds were broken

I would get the head checked at a machine shop to make sure its not warped. Then change the hg when you refit it and do a full service.
