I was thinking the other day about my mates air ride on his bora which cost him a fair amount of cash and it got me thinking, how hard can it be to to it cheaper?
Does any one know much about air bagging and such Or range rovers?
Because on eBay you can get a range rover p38 compressor and valve block and and airline and fittings pretty cheap. I have a feeling tho it won't be as simple as that tho the compressor will probbably need some sort of ecu to make it work, I'm Not sure how the airbags from one would fit but it looks like they can be modified to fit say mk3 golf struts?
Has any one else thought about this or had any other ideas.

Compressors from Range Rovers etc just aren't up to the job...they are running for long periods of time in the application that you're looking at and they burn out very quickly...that's why people use those off roading compressors with a high duty cycle...the best one we found was the T-Maxx adventurer- it is a portable compressor with a handle and casin, but that is all removable- it is half the price of the cheapest Viair comp and a better spec As for bags, you're looking at Uvair Aerosport bags ( they have a hole in the middle for the damper) and you can mount them on a set of cheapy coilovers with the springs removed. You can buy pre-wired valve blocks for a couple of hundred dollars in the USA, although these can be problematic if you don't add relays (the instructions don't tell you to...) Tanks....well you can use an old fire extinguisher, scuba air tanks, Truck air tanks, Calor gas bottles, whatever you can get for cheaps really However, if you look in the USA and Canada, you can sometimes score whole systems for reasonable money....

Yeah, there are different levels of quality and engineering and of course, it depends on who's supplying it...the ways I described are the bargain basement way of doing it, but you can have custom built struts, higher quality valves, comps, etc... Like everything, you can have what you can afford!

BMW E39 Tourer, they have airbag rear suspension, new Airbags are available from Euro Car Parts, for under £130 each compressor sits in the spare wheel well, it is ECU controlled, but I don't see why it cant be run from an on off switch, after all its an electric motor on the pump

One thing i will add to this, as i looked into doing my previa a while back, and that is to make sure you use good quality top mounts designed for airbags. Otherwise your front bags can suffer from wear caused by twisting with the steering and the last thing you want is a bag blowing out at 70mph on a motorway.

A switch on the dashboard will just keep supplying more current untill something burns out.
