Anyone confirm / deny that some of these mutant hunchback estate-agent trolleys came fitted with turbochargers? I was told this by a little birdie, but I suspect that birdie was talking BS??? Just that if they did... strapped to a 16-valve 1.8... see where I'm going with this.....

I've often wondered this, being a 318ti, but I'm fairly sure they aren't.

No, they didn't.
The 'T' in the 'Ti' badge was for 'Touring' - as in the original 02 series cars.
I wouldn't go near one with a bargepole, though. The E36 is quite possibly the worst BMW ever made, although the Compact just edges it because not only did it share all the bad stuff in terms of build quality with the E36, but it also had the outdated rear suspension of the E30.

The E36 wasn't bad really, my mum had one for a few years (323i) and my dad recons it handled better than my mums later CLK230k and nearly as well as his current Impreza.
The 1996-2004 5-series must be the worst BMW made!

My fave shape 3 series too*, although i like em with a boot best in 2 door flavour but a chopped one would be good as a track car as Dom said, i reckon. *To Look at that is

My brother had an E36.
The interior fell apart. The paint faded *really* badly. The body suffered a rather major outbreak of rot. The engine aquired a Pinto-esque death rattle.
The E34 that preceeded it was vastly superior.
My advice is to stay away from the E36 and look for a really tidy E30 instead.

I reckon an E36 compact would be a shockingly effective fast road/trackday weapon with a decent lump, zero interior, cage and 8" wide rims.

Yes, I know the E34 is a 5-series.
It was also the last properly made BMW.
He reckoned that an E36 had to be good 'cos it was a more modern design than his E34.
How wrong he was.

E36`s seemed to get a bad rep for build quality but I don't think they were any worse than any previous BMW, but there were more of them on the road. BMW seat fabric seems to be made out of 1970`s tea towels and starts to deteriorate as soon as they leave the show room.
I always thought it was a wasted opportunity to not make an M version or at least 6 cylinder.

Bah. Thought as much.
Back to the drawing board then.....
Interesting the points made about rust & quality.... Thinking about it I have seen alot of E36 models with galloping arch-rot on them. As for seat fabric quality, I aren't sure... most of the ones you see 'for sale' have horribly threadbare seats, but mine are nigh on perfect with just a tiny wear patch after 175k... and the ones in my brothers car (185,000 miles, blue smoking like a biatch!) are absolutely mint....

I'm a little surprised with all the negatives on the E36. I have one for a daily driver and I think it's great for that. Just bought it back then cause I came across one very cheap but love it now. The car covered about 190.000 miles and the interior seems brand new. It's got a little more rust than I would like it to but what early 90's car doesn't have rustproblems?
