so, if i found a car in a breakers [hypothetically] and i really wanted to put this hypothetical 100% solid hypothetical purple favorit estate glxie missing 2 mirrors and a starter but otherwise no rust whatsoever and far to good to scrap (for illustration purposes only btw!) back on the hypothetical road and its been declared scrapped (not hypothetically) how is it done? when scrapping is this when the category is declared? so if it was d, which it is, then what is that test you have to get done on it? like an SVA or something?

If it's not a Cat-B, you get in touch with the DVLA and they sort you out...I think :/

Hypothetically, you could just get a "new" vin number. Not exactly legal tho.. But as long as it gets a good `ol car back... I did not just recently get a new VIN number for my kadett c, and i would`nt just drill out the old one and replace it with a new one..  |

Speak to the breaker first, make sure he is ok. Some breakers will refuse to sell complete cars that have been scrapped.
If it has been scrapped then it shouldnt be any category at all as these are only classified after an insurance claim.

Cat A needs to be crushed. They won't sell it to you.
Cat B needs to be stripped for parts. They'll only sell it to a licenced breaker.
Cat C and Cat D can be returned to the road. You'll need an MoT (even if the car still has a valid one, the salvage yard should destroy the certificate) and if it's a Cat C you will also need a VIC check which can be organised through your local DVLA office. All this does is make sure the numbers all match up and the car is what it says it is.
Be aware if you're planning on selling it, it'll show up in an HPI check as written off so keep any docs to show this, my advice is to take photos of the car when you buy it to prove it wasn't a mangled heap. The guy that bought my Cat D Audi had a load of hassle moving it on from some guy wanting it cheap, kept claiming the car had been really badly repaired (when all it had been written off for was a dented boot and knackered steering lock!)

well, the actual status then is that the car has been declared scrapped due to an ecu fault that they couldnt obtain parts for, which means i guess its been declared etc. can a declared scrapped car be brought back? obviously then i guess categories don't come into it??

I think there's another test you can get done now (ask at VIC office) and it's quite in depth - checking quality of repairs and it can be removed from HPi - but I think it's a pretty expensive process...
anyone know what this is called ?

Its been declared scrapped at the DVLA, this is done so that they can consider it as ‘out of circulation’ on their records and not dish out SORN tickets etc on it. However no-one has inspected it and declared it to be unroadworthy as is the case with insurance jobs. I think if the scrapman will sell you it and give you a proper receipt, you should have no problem to get it on the road, when you apply for the logbook you might be obliged to get a VIC check to demonstrate that it is not a ringer etc but apart from that there should be no hassle. THAT’S WHAT I THINK

Yes indeed. You can walk into a scrapyard and buy any old sh'tter even when the previous owner has correctly filled out the 'Scrapped' part of the V5 and sent it off. You're right in saying categories don't come into it in this case, that's only for insurance writeoffs and i should read questions more closely  you'll still need to MoT it, you'll still need a VIC when you apply for a new logbook, and i think it will still appear on the HPi check as previously scrapped. |

If they are declared scrapped then as MR_B says they are classed as out of circulation, this also means the reg plates could have been sold off. I know off about 3 vehicles that have been re-registered after being scrapped and two out of three came back with different plates but I don't know if this was because the reg numbers had been sold. This was before VIC checks were required.

thus the nightmare with my beige mk1 its Cat and requires a vic check the nearest test center is derby which is a fair old distance, oneday i think it will need trailering there

But since the computerised MOT came in you really need your V5 to get the MOT, which you cant get till you get it VIC checked. There is a way round that though, but I cant remember what it is. |

Hi
I bought a scooter that had been declared scrapped,
I got a form from the post office(the one you use if you buy a car with the v5 missing)
Filled it in,sent it off and they sent me a new v5.
The previous owner of the skoda probably never even sent the v5 back,Most non car people just dump it and leave it at that
